Turning off chat in lobby?
Love the game and would like for my son to try it out because I think he would have a lot of fun. Problem is the chat is extremely toxic 80% of the time. The things I have seen in chat I would not want my child to see from extremely hateful slurs to seeing people told to go kill themselves.

Great game but the devs really need to look into some type of chat moderation or give us an option to turn it off. I haven't come across anything in game to turn it off, maybe I'm missing it?

Unfortunately, the is no way to turn off the chat. i do know a family friendly server called Sue & Rc's. They are great at keeping it clean in the chat and the races. Being a father of 3 (all grown up now) I found a little preparation by discussing what to do when they see bad stuff online... (not an if, but a when) to tell you and make it a teaching moment. Having that ongoing conversation ahead of time will make it easier for both of you.

Hey thanks Phoink !

As a semi-responsible and fully retired parent i can assure you that Sue and i take keeping a family friendly lobby is our PRIME concern.

I actually grew up racing and at the age of 5 my bed-room door opened upon the stock car shop...by the age of 14 i owned MY OWN (holy was that an exciting day....)

Eventually stock cars became racing yachts, a sport where swearing specifically and un-sporting conduct in general a LITERALLY against the racing rules !

Add to that the simple fact that i have more hours in game than the next THREE players combined, make a habit of hunting trolls game wide (for the pure merry hell of it) and i can assure you that our server is a pretty darn safe environment to invite your kids to.

My "partner in crime" Sue is VERY dedicated to having a safe place for not only all the kids and nice folks, but even runs a private club for them !

Let's just say that she does a fine job of keeping ME "in line" , but also happens to be the one and ONLY player who is actually CATCHING UP TO ME !......and unlike me WON"T be out to those "toxic servers" or the "super dirty kill or be killed" servers...

Basically two of this game most determined players set up a server as a school for new players and kids...

our format is "dirty lite" so crashing IS allowed....

BUT the more experienced a player IS the more we ask them to play nice...

and no matter HOW HARD a new player is trying to "troll" we just pretend it's not happening until such time as that player becomes a "viable threat"...so a FIVE YEAR OLD could play for quite some time with very little chance of actually "breaking a rule"

and our rules can be even MORE family friendly IF a parental type happens to TELL us which of you kids we have visiting us...

so i do hope this helps :)

Might give Sue and RC a headup that you got a rookie kid player racing. ;)

Really best to keep him off of multiplayer altogether then. That's what I would do in your position. No positive or logical reason for him to be playing against other people if he really is too young at this point anyways. Just setup custom events for him to mess around in. Obviously the best way for him to have fun in the game.

Depend how young the son is. There a 12, maybe 13 year old player now, racing at Sue and RC server and he one the faster guys on the tracks.

But my young grandnephews can't handle keeping car going straight with my Wheel. So I put them in a derby to play around offline. :)

Although this might be "wisest" in terms avoiding swearing.....

There is something i'd like to point out sort "hidden" in my "racing resume",,,,,,

See the whole reason i MENTIONED that i startted racing so very young was to IMPLY the really really long list of reason i am involved in the Juniors sailing program and actually TEACH real racing to real kids in real life.....

Now i suppose i could go on about teaching kids "sporting conduct" and "life lessons"

But see.....the MAIN lessons i learned as a very young boy racing go-karts and progressing to stock cars before i was even old enough for a drivers licence is quite simple.....

1) Racing is all about winning a few and loosing A LOT !

2) Grown ups are some of the worst sport of all. When it comes to having "kids" around it simply does NOT matter if a youth has MORE experience and is techncally more proficient. As a matter of fact having any actual talent is a 100 % gaurentee that the "20 somethings" will swear more than ever, act rougher than ever and engage in all sorts of "bully" behaviou because "this is not a suitable environment for kids"....

3) That i am quite capable of holding a grudge against "elitist attitude" for well over 40 years !

I appreciate all the input and suggestions guys. My son is old enough to enjoy many games with me and honestly I'm not that worried about general swearing. Kids hear that stuff all the time at school anyway. I'm heavily involved in gaming and esports and understand the toxicity that can come about. This game just seems to take it to the next level and there is no sort of filtering system what so ever like almost every other game has. I've only been playing it for about 10-12 hours and I've seen horrific things said in chat and I'm not easily offended lol.

I understand how people can get frustrated and want to lash out. Even though it's called Wreckfest there are times when people are just complete knuckle heads (excuse the language lol) and are only on there to try and ruin others experience. Then again some people also take it way to seriously for what it is as well.

Didn't even realize you were posting Raceclimb. We just had an epic race the other night and the server was actually very chill and respectful. I'm assuming it was the one you run.

This topic has come up before and I feel like I was misunderstood. I do not participate in hateful slurs or swearing to feel cool. I was 16, 33 years ago. I ignore as much of that as I can. Unfortunately being on the internet with absolute freedom to express yourself pretty much any way you want brings out the special people.

I remember hating when CALL OF DUTY came out for PS3 with chat in game and It was a pain trying to turn everyone off because they were either screaming at people around them or playing their delightful music extra loud to drown out the people screaming at them. Thankfully you can turn off VOIP.

Use this as a teaching moment because when you are not around they will be subjected to all sorts of ass hats. Again, I am not in favour of 80% of the conversations in chat but I am thankful that I do not have to hear them. Please never let there be horns in Wreckfest.
