Take a look @ the player numbers-
https://steamcharts.com/app/228380
Do the math. Less than 3 players per server @ peak activity , and that assumes all players are in multiplayer. They are not. Some are doing career, some are farming credits and level.

I haven't looked lately, but the last time I did look there were over 200 servers for this game. When you add filters to narrow down the criteria that you want, the server count lessens, but the player count is so low that finding a populated lobby is quite difficult.
There are so many servers that require certain mods, there are so many that have certain rules and requirements that I frankly get bored trying to find a suitable lobby. When a suitable lobby is located, the player count is too low to matter. Re-filter, rinse, repeat.
This situation isn't the fault of the game or it's devs. The community wanted all of those mods.
The community wanted all of those rules, all of the ability to ban players and the ability for anyone to have a server if they had a PC that would handle it.
So, there it is.
Just my 3 cents........
(Edited)
While i understand what you are saying here for us it is not about game population or expence, as a gaming squad we have been around for almost 15 years, i have been a member for 12/13 years i think, we are not one of these huge gaming squads with hundreds of Discord/TS3 channels where most members dont even know each other ...... We dont just accept member join requests, i was playing with this squad for like a year before they invited me to join.
We speak on the phone, whatsaapp and ts3 most nights and meet up once a year, we have stayed at each others houses, we are not just a gaming squad, we are a group of close friends now, most over 35 years of age.
Anyway my point being we have always had a dedicated server for whatever game we are enjoying and whenever possible for us to admin and make sure the game is played fair, just how we like to play .... Its more of a place for us to meet up, call home if you will, other people can join to so long as they are in it to play fair and have some fun is all we would ask.
We dont care for mods, only rules would be no driving backward on purpose, no singling people out, no bus or harvester and no rasist or religion in the chat.
Be aware Wreckfest need a fast single thread CPU and handle 24 players online, a big, fast pipe to the internet. like 100mbit down and 50mbit up. Upload bandwidth is very important, if to narrow, server going have trouble sending all that data out to 24 players and not be laggy.
I have 100 down but only 6 up, I can only handle 18 players when I put up a host.
Be sure checkout the server threads here and at Bugbear forum:

Also might ask about dedicated server service at the Wreckfest Discord channel > mp - discussion https://discord.gg/e5NUaTY
If find server service to use, might see if you can do a trial month to see how well the dedicated server service handles 24 players, before signing a long term contact.
If interesetd? I can provide contact info. Just reply to this post.
3 in Australia, 2 in Brazil 1 in Peru, 1in Mexico and 2 in Argentina Oh 2 from the Netherlands and 1 From Great Britain...
None have ever reported back any issues. Unless it was on the players side getting to there Server.
Rf2 Asia get any where from a 100 - 200 ping ...but because rf2 Net Code is so good...they get 50 to 70 players and no warp or lag..Unless
the Internet is slow everywhere.
Ya...I rent anywhere world wide...Still take PayPal...so whatever $40.00 US is in there money.
I will set up a base Wreck Fest sever in there lobby...and call it NRT Test...they can connect and see what
kind of results they get.
I will try and get it up by morning..
Anyways..if you have any more questions...reach out
All the Best
Dave
The members of our league were from the UK, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Ireland.
We also had some Italian friends that would join us.
Us guys from the UK had pings ~25ms avg. while the rest were round about ~35ms max.

They're Full Duplex @least 100mb up 100mb down on their networks and charge good, competitive prices.
They have servers in France, Holland, Italy, Germany and US.
When you rent one of their servers, you have full and total control of it.
This means you're free to install any game you like on it.
You're allowed to run any amount of game servers on it simultaneously.
Bandwidth here is unlimited as long as you don't use it for file sharing.
You have a choice of OS... Windows Server or Linux.
They sit with you for as long as it takes if you're not sure or don't know the OS.
They have 24Hr support, so no matter what time of day or night/timezone...
They don't have surcharges,
Anyways... no matter who you decide to rent a server from.
It is absolutely critical that you ask, if you can incur any surcharges for whatever reason and
get it in writing/email.
Some other dedi server rental companies will...
Not allow you full control.
Will only allow one game server running at one time.
Have limited bandwidth and if you go over that limit, they'll charge you for it.
Only allow X amount of clients to join.
Lastly... not have 24Hr support.!!.
Hope this helps...
Thanks again. :)
Ha! Yeah we remember you actually, really fast if i remember correctly, may have been a little drunk that night lol.
But yeah i have to agree with you, during a week day not a a lot of players online but on a weekend and evenings there are always plenty of full servers going.
From early morning GMT until the evening it is quiet, as most people have work etc. Here is a screenshot from Last Sat Night, and I expect tonight to be no different. The game is not as you claim 'nearly dead'. Numbers have steadily frown over the last couple of weeks in faact due to the steam sales and that will only continue with the Christmas Sale only around the corner. https://steamcommunity.com/id/iamjohnconnor/screenshot/951845529588043262
