Maybe the origin of it was a dispute between two neighbors about who has the better looking lawn that quickly turned into the first unofficial lawn mower derby.

If not that it just seems very natural to me that people got into the idea of causing some havoc with a mower. When i used one i was thinking constantly about it :D
