All I installed was what was necessary for Wreckfest - Steam, nVidia drivers (not GeForce experience) and the game.
It works perfectly. Absolutely no crashes whatsoever.
I'll gradually start adding the stuff I use and see if anything takes it out.
At the moment my money is on GeForce Experience being the cause.
Great news Peter O!
As mentioned that I would pass on the results of the 1080GTX return to Gigabyte through my local PC shop. Received a refurbished 1080GTX as a replacement after a couple of weeks so this obviously confirms that the Geforce was at fault.
Not overly impressed with the replacement card as it has this 'kinda of oil' over the card which I figure is from whatever the technician has sprayed on it during the refurbishment process.
So I'm switching from Gigabyte now and trying MSI as I hear they are a decent manafacturer.
As a side note I put a 2080RTX Gigabyte (vanilla version) card in my system temporarily and at stock speeds that card ran at 87 degrees and throttled in game which did not impress as it clearly had lack lustre cooling.
For a $1300 graphics card to have (IMO) substandard cooling unless you shell out another $150-$200 for their better cooled version of the same card is not accepetable.
Good on everyone who contributed on this thread and offered help :)
So was it a bad video card or Nvidia Geforce software causing the problem?
Interestingly, the game ran perfectly after I'd rebuilt the PC and just installed the game and what was needed to play it (drivers, Steam etc).
After a few weeks, and I'd say 10-20 hours of perfect running, I plugged my Oculus Rift back in, and installed the software for that.
Now I'm getting frequent game crashes again.
Which means, obviously and unarguably, that Bugbear need to implement full VR support into the game.
Then I plugged the Rift in and installed the drivers, now it's crashing.
The Rift is now permanently plugged in,
Purple44 - It was a defective 1080GTX graphics card, specifically the RAM on the card.
I’ve had this problem for 1 week too.
I have an MSI 1080 Gaming X with a screen 144hz and I have found a solution to remove this bug.
In my Nvidia driver, I activated the "Max frame rate" option on 90FPS in the 3D parameters (program parameter for wreckfest). Wreckfest is not a First Person Shooter just a race game, 90 FPS is enough for this game.
No more fatal errors since, I hope this solution help you, It's not necessary to change GPU for this bug
