THE FRAME RATE THREAD
ok, in the last few weeks alone several keen players have asked for my help on this and over the previous months many others have had troubles too

these issues are NOT "computer noob with a potatoe"

in many cases the computer being played on is top of the line

often simple language barriers, or even jut shyness are the reason we don't hear more from them.

one example would be Alecia, who doesn't speak English very well, has NO CLUE how to look up her specs (nor do i)...chimed in at my club, got mistaken for a troll and despite repeated requests for help on my part has continued to be convienently forgotten

shall we ignore Duke of Awesome, Chris !, Coma White, Andrea and many others as well ?

nahhhh...let's figure it out :)

we can assume each of these players has been advised about turning off grass and shadows (even i know that much...lol)

i'll try to get specific players to chime in with their particular woe

but FIRST ....before anyone asks for "specs"

can someone please explain in EASY terms how to check one's specs

preferably something we can easily translate into German ?

but no matter HOW we dance around it...there IS a problem that affects SOME players who game long, hard and OFTEN provide advice to others

any and all help. input and ideas greatly appreciated

This will get you computer basic specs, but only the video card series, like 900 series, but not actually video card number, like a 950, 960, 970, 980.

http://www.wikihow.com/Find-Video-Card-Specs

You would think AMD and Nvidia could make the video card's actually number easier to find for Windows.

If computer don't have a sticker or you got the box computer came in or if built the computer yourself and know what video card you put into computer, then it tougher to find out what actually video card you got, unless take computer cover off and take a look at the video card. May have to pull card out of slot to see model number on video card.

Device manager in Windows can be used to get all specs . I know where it is in Win7 sp1, but not how to tell Win 8, 8.1 or 10 users where to find it in their PC.

DX Diag is also a good way to find specs, particularly graphics and sound in gaming. I will post an example below this post.

This downloadable tool is also available:

https://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

This is a free d/l and will access every aspect of a PC ,all hardware, etc.

http://filehippo.com/

"File Hippo" is also a good source for this and other PC tools, etc.

But unfortunately dxdiag only get you this "AMD Radeon R9 200 Series", not the actually video card you got:

Radeon R9 295X2
Radeon R9 290X
Radeon R9 290
Radeon R9 285
Radeon R9 280X
Radeon R9 280
Radeon R9 270X
Radeon R7 260X
Radeon R7 250

The 250 going get a lot less FPS than the 290 with Wreckfest.

This information on the hard drive somewhere. Wreckfest can tell you which video card you have. Why can't dxdiag? Or is Wreckfest getting the information from Steam?
👽H€L¡XX® Dec 28, 2016 @ 6:07am
I have looked everywhere and can't find the detailed info for the video card specific model number, only the series. Steam system info only gives the series as well. That said, knowing the amount of memory on the card, the memory frequency and GPU clock speed are helpful when trying to diagnose the various problems PC gamers encounter.

Graphics:

ATI AMD Radeon R9 200 Series
Manufacturer ATI
Model AMD Radeon R9 200 Series
Device ID 1002-6798
Subvendor MSI (1462)
Current Performance Level Level 0
Voltage 0.850 V
Technology 28 nm
GPU Clock 1050.0 (1020.0) MHz
Temperature 87 °F
Core Voltage 0.850 V
Driver version 14.502.1014.0
BIOS Version 113-C3865000-O77
Memory Type GDDR5
Memory 3072 MB
Bandwidth 288.0 GB/s
Count of performance levels : 2
Level 1
GPU Clock 300 MHz
Memory Clock 150 MHz
Level 2
GPU Clock 1050 MHz
Memory Clock 1500 MHz

This info is available from the "Speccy" tool I gave the link to earlier.

It's easy enough to find out what card it is from that information. Looks like a Radeon R9 280X to me.

Here's my specs.
Windows 10 Pro x64
CPU: AMD FX 9590 (4.7ghz, 5ghz boost)
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB (overclocked to 1140 core, 1450 memory)
MB: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z
RAM: 16GB DDR3 2400 @ 1833mhz
SSD: OCZ ARC100 240GB
HDD: Seagate 1TB
Monitor: LG 29UM67 Ultrawide with Freesync 2560x1080

CPU and GPU are Cooled by a custom watercooling loop.

I have tried stock clocks on the GPU and downclocked the CPU to 4ghz.

The issue for me is massive fluctuations in frame rate, it can vary from 80+ to less than 20fps and gets worse as the race progresses. the lowest points seem to come when there is a lot of collisions happening or a lot of debris on the track.

It seemed to start with the last update before the december update but was made worse with the december update and the game is borderline unplayable for me as it is now.

The frame rate also seems to pulse constantly or so like a constant stutter and causes input lag, this seems to vary every race and is some times more intrusive than others. this only seems to happen in multiplayer and has happened from time to time in older builds but in the december update it's pretty constant.

No graphics settings make any difference, I have tried everything on minimum and maximum and it's always the same.

Obviously, the graphics settings in any game have the greatest impact on performance.
Native resolution on this game for me is 1920 X 1080. Less would run faster, but would look bad.
MSAA( x4 or x8) rather than FXAA causes a big drop in performance. Shadows and grass settings are important. Texture and reflections. All of these settings are a factor.

Frame rate that stutters, hurks and jerks and causes controller lag is one thing.
Varying famerates that don't cause visual or controller lag is another situation, imho.
I never attempt to watch an FPS counter and try to drive. I'm not that good at multitasking.

Most games have wildly varying framerates due to the amount of rendering taking place varying , the load on the GPU is greater when there are a lot of cars, wrecks, debris, dust, etc.

While I don't have an issue in this game ( I just played a 6 lap race w/ 23 opponents ) , it wasn't online, just in single-player mode. I saw from 23 FPS up to as high as 90 FPS. I had no problem with controlling the car whatsoever. I started 23rd of 24, and finished 1st.

I can see very little difference in the game as far as updates changing performance, personally.

PC config varies widely and the overclocking of CPU and GPU speeds and voltage is never a guarantee of higher performance. Mild overclocking is not usually an issue, but in some cases overclocking is detremental to performance. Very high panoramic resolution , 4K resolution, and multi-screen setups are an entirely different issue.

You can check your Gpu by
----------------------------------------
1. right click on desktop
2. choose nvidia context menue
3. choose "help" at the top of the page
4. click on "system information"
5. At the left side of the window should be "elements" -> thats your GPU

(should work very similar for ATI cards. Just choose the ATI context menue in 2. and search your way through)

You can check your CPU and Ram (Windows 7) by
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Open "start menue"
2. Right click on Computer (right side of the meune)
3. Choose properties
4. The second listing under "sytsem" is your CPU. Right under "Classification"
5. Right under your CPU is your Ram.It only shows the amount not the type, but shouldn´t make
a big difference.

Gpu
------

Hmmm, did you just tell Steam to uninstall Wreckfest or did you delete the files here too, to do a complete fresh install of Wreckfest?

just through steams uninstaller
I had this. Rename your app date and delete the game then reinstall
I think I may have solved my problem but only time will tell.

I did the uninstall and reinstall, this improved my overall performance but I was still getting a lot of stutter completely unrelated to the actual frame rate output by my video card as this was always showing between 35 and 100fps according to RTSS. even at 100fps i was getting juddering like it was running at less than 20fps.

It was also happening in single player races so that ruled out network issues.

I changed the in game refresh rate from 75hz to 60hz and it seems to be running well now.

Looks like the Physics engine may run at 60hz and in the last couple of builds something has changed so it doesn't like to sync with a refresh rate that isn't a multiple of 60.

It could be due to using Freesync so I may try running at 75hz with freesync disabled just to test.

I still need to test it for a few more online races but so far looks good. :steamhappy:
