Charrua Soccer- Pro Edition is a soccer game with a cartoon like feel and a firm placement in the arcade camp.

Surprisingly, there is an abundance of options to tailor your experience including speed of the game; difficulty levels; assists; and even the option to turn on or off some party options in certain bespoke tournaments like “red spiral” where a scoring player gets a red card and is sent off; “special goals” where headed goals count double and acrobatic goals count treble; and “golden goals” where you can set the number of goals needed to win the game.

There are also an amazing number of tournaments to choose from, with all the major tournaments covered and a few more unusual ones and a career and league modes also. There’s even a woman’s league and tournaments, or you can play with male and female players in the same team.

If you are playing solo there is plenty of different things to do and achievements to earn, plus there is online play, but currently it is dead. I particularly liked the career mode where you start with an amateur team but playing matches earns you XP which you can spend on training your players, increasing their attributes, or just blow it on skins, hats, or flags. Some of the skins are hilarious and really add an arcade feel to the game.

If you are playing with a group of friends there are custom leagues and tournaments to play plus you can play two games at the same time using the mirror option.

The number of options really is impressive.

Charrua Soccer is very much an arcade game but there is scope to pass the ball around, and cross it, scoring from headers, or using special moves like bicycle or scissor kicks. There is a small resemblance to football sims but the fact that players cannot run very far without tiring, and the chaotic tackling elements park it more in the arcade style.

You can switch players, which sometimes becomes a little annoying as it’s not always obvious which player is selected. The differences between a normal player in blue and a controlled player in dark blue is not always distinguishable enough, and players do not seem to automatically change when you want them to, leaving you changing players multiple times before you hit the right one.

Tackling is a bit hit and miss. You only have a very violent sliding tackle to perform which can get you into trouble, with players quite easily getting red cards. If there are many players around the ball and it gets a bit congested, a sliding tackle can sometimes tackle the wrong player and have you taking an early bath. I guess this is part and parcel of the arcade game play though.

The game is very frantic, and you have hardly any time to think, but you can change the pace of the game, and I found it more satisfying on the slowest speed, but there are four different speeds to choose from.

I also like to zoom out on the view so that I can see all of my players, but even with the farthest view, not all players were visible at once, and the mini map showing the positions of your players I found useless. This made it difficult to pick out players to pass to, and even with the passing assist on, it is difficult to pass to a player unless you can see them. The referee is also indistinguishable from the players on the pitch sometimes because he wears a similar coloured top.

Most of my goals were scored from distance. I found it incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to score from close range as any shot automatically aims at the goalkeeper no matter how much you press up or down on the game pad. If you charge your shot to full power outside the box and shoot, you will mostly score. Being able to fully power your shot is a challenge though as defenders are on you in a flash and it takes a bit of passing to be out in the open. There is no offside in the game so often a lob over the last defender can give you the space needed.

Players can sprint, but they run out of stamina very quickly, so dribbling isn’t really much of an option. Instead, you will find that quick passes around players is needed, or just hoof it up and hope for the best. I have scored some nice goals with a lot of team play, and I have also scored lots of route one goals. If you lob it in to the air, this is when a header, or special move can be performed.

There are no official licenses in the game so player names are done by christian names and club names are fictional. This isn't ideal but perfectly understandable.

The players look like cartoon characters with their large heads and eyes, and the stadiums and crowd actually look very good, with a variety of different fans packed into the larger grounds, or a more basic and empty feel in the lower tiers of the league.

There is a meaty arcade tune playing as a default throughout the match, but I preferred to turn it off and hear the crowd noises instead.

Charrua Soccer is a highly customizable arcade soccer game that should cater for all difficulty levels and provide bespoke games no matter whether you are playing solo or with a bunch of friends.

Game play is frantic and often ugly to play, with multiple flying tackles and possession changing frequently, but it is a lot of fun, and there is scope to put some decent passages of play together.

I am hoping that the online community builds with more sales, but in the meantime, there is so much to do as a solo player. This is definitely one of the better arcade soccer games on Steam.

To be honest I was quite surprised about this game... it doesn't play too bad. The game looks 'cute' so I didn't have high hopes but in my first match I was thumped 5-2 by a lesser team in Hardcore mode, so at least there is some challenge to it - it has potential.

A few Pros...
- the player animations are pretty decent, the stadia looks nice and the overall aesthetic is very good
- there are plenty of teams and options to use and all sorts of levels of assistance for different abilities
- you can change kits mid game, so if you find you can't pick your players out you can do something about it. You can't pick them up front though

And some Cons...
- there is no vertical camera, and the furthest zoom out is far too close for my liking
- I can't see an editor being available - if you want to grow a community you need to give people the option of doing their own thing. The club team names are all made up (although you can tell who they are) and players names are just first names
- almost all of things you can buy in the store are childish - I don't want to play with players dressed in a lion suit or an Easter egg, or change the ball for a top hat. There needs to be some better options
- in game, you have to wait for your player to control the ball before doing anything - there is no instant control or one-time options for passing or shooting
- your attackers and their markers sit in the penalty area so there is no possibility to play a ball over the back and run on to it

I'll give this some more time and consideration and see how it improves, but it's fun. It's certainly worth a punt if you like playing football games.

I was honestly disappointed in this game. I bought this game because I've sunk a ton of hours into Pixel Cup Soccer and I was hoping this would be an evolution of that game but in 3D. I don't have a ton of problems with the gameplay in Charrua Soccer, but compared to PCS there's almost no content. Random events, teams you need to rotate and plan due to cards/injuries/exhaustion, special passes/kicks/slides to grind for, tournaments in season play (from what I could tell, I think I got to the 4th season), are all gone. In addition, passes and shots feel a lot less precise. Without assist, you have almost no margin of error; with assists, you have very little control. Maybe multiplayer is great, but I don't do much couch co-op so I don't know.

I kept playing because I kept hoping more content would show up, but no dice. I think the dev is solid, and if this was in early access I'd probably give it a recommend on the hope of more content. As a full release I just can't endorse it, even at the very reasonable price tag.

Excellent game! Just started playing and I can say that its loads of fun when sharing the game with the Mirror Online mode. I completely recommend it, as its also fresh air for the industry of football games. Worth trying it!

The best arcade football game out there, and with tons of personality.

Charrua Soccer is a very fun game to play both alone and with friends. The game mechanics are very well implemented and give the game a lot of life. On the other hand, it doesn't consume a lot of PC resources, so anyone can play it.

You can unlock new teams, stadiums, balls... simply by playing.
There are men teams and women teams.
There is a career mode when you can create your team.
