I hope this game gets a sequel as it's a great start for a new ip. Glad I don't go by reviewers these days.
I read one guy saying how the Madamme fight was impossible and ranting about how he hated the game. I was dreading getting to this fight and finding it too hard.... but i beat her first time... it was epic.... not saying it was easy but it was a decent challenge and once i had remixed my combos to allow more health regen and timer cooldowns it was golden.
You pick up 5 health boost things and up pop the thing to say that getting 5 will give you another notch of health. Fine let the game do that once, not every time you pick up 5 of the things.
No game should ever break the flow of combat to give tutorials about how to hit stuff or to fiddle about with the combo thing. Especially annoying when it's to create your first 6hit combo and you dont have the pressens to do so without stripping a lower one.
That should be a cardinal rule.
Story so far seems alright although there are some moments of dodgy writing/scrtpting.
Like at the beginning when you're stood in line for the CHAIR OF PAIN. I refused to move forward as I can't believe anyone, even an amnesiac, would willingly sit in a chair that causes people to scream in agony. Bio break and a fresh cup of coffee later and ther droid was still asking me to move forward while the guy that was sat screaming 5 minutes earlier was still sat screaming.
It could have done with some other modes like Arena modes, time trials etc and leaderboards.
Oh yeah - and the powers are so good! I love the one where you strap a bomb to someone.
I also know what you meant about the line for the chair - BUT i was prepared to suspend my disbelief and see where the game took me. It sounds like you wanted to deliberately break it instead. I'd rather do that stuff and ruin the magic the second time around... first time i want to enjoy it. You could also argue that they are being controlled to a degree. Memories are planted as well as removed - so its possible that while they don't want to go in the chair they can't actually physically control themselves.
i think your being a bit dishonest in your opinion. You say the tutorials are badly done, but i also think that if they weren’t displayed prominently enough you would still have the same complant. Could the tutorials be made less intrusive, possibly. But as they are they give you the information you need as quickly as you want to go through it.
As for the writing. Its apparent that the game presents itself as a cinematic experience, as such its expected that the player perform as the lead character. When you actively REFUSE to perform as the script directs you cannot turn around and go "the scripting is bad."
The problem is tha instead of making gameplay that would match the story and setting they went with the "safe" approach of making a game based on combat. The story about getting your memories back and taking down an evil orgnanization would lend itself seamlessly into a stealth or assassination type game with less emphasis on combat.
Unfortunately people like combat not stealth so they made the game combat oriented even if it does not fit the plot well. As a result you get a boss fight with kid X-Mas, a nobody character thrown in just so you can fight him, and a giant robot which does the same. In decent games boss fights are for taking down the big bad guys, not random thugs like they are here. Worse yet perhaps is the ill concieved Leapers, they are eveywhere and seem to also be thrown into the game world just to give an excuse for combat. I call them ill concieved because I have no idea how a memory can logically cause a physical mutation.
Basically I agree with this quote from a review: "The result is a game that a small number of people will rightly love and cherish, but overall it's an uneven experience - one that feels like it knows what it wants to be, but has resigned itself to existing in a world where it can't quite get away with it".
I think they threw the combat into the game because fighting games are popular. The setting and story called for more of a stealth/assissination game rather than a combat driven one. The developer knew it, but they caved into the popular fighting game craze rather than sticking to their vision, and boy does it show....a lot.
The mild mannered Mr Barrowclough would have poked Fletcher to get him moving given enough time.
How vital is a combat tutorial anyway in a game where you have 2 buttons to hit and one to dodge? Especially on harder difficulty levels.
I will admit that Maybe my irritation from the tips stems more from the fact you cant disable them than the way they're worded. I usually disable tips in games and check the manual if I come across something thats not obvious by the controls.
I do think however that no game should ever interupt the flow of action just to give you tips. A small popup telling you about a new unlocked tip perhaps but not the equivalent of a projectionist hitting pause just so they can open their crisps.
I enjoyed the game regardless. The devs are clearly very talented and I hope the game sells enough copies to warrant a sequel.
IF they had added a hot chick? Nilin not hot enough?

Also I don't think it's a flop.
stop playing games on easy and they might not be so boring for you.
But they brown nose the famous exclusives like The Last of Us to ridiculous levels. Now that's the fashion.
i can't explain it because you already said it, is a great game!
