Not very I would posit.
Have you tried BG from Google Play on your tablet/phablet? Not that great...:(
I am keyboard+mouse player but I use Steam controller for some games. I am using it enough to believe that if the game interface does not count with the option to use controller, it can be real pain to set controller.
Fantastic? I guess different tastes...
Even they don't know whether or not it's fantastic since they phrased it as a question.
PS: it is much better with touch controls imo...
(edit: I am talking about a finished AND unmodded game!)
Just out of curiosity, what is the problem with the android/ios version you don't like other than it being smaller than what your playing on right now?
Maybe how worse is it to control the game? Do you really mean that question seriously?
It is not problem with being different from desktop version. The "problem" with controls is actually being same(!) as for desktop version.
On the other hand I do not blame Beamdog for that. The game is just very old and none at that time counted with touch controls. It is the same as desktop with very few adjustments to controls (e.g. like camera movement). I would even say it is playable. It is just not great (it controls definitely worse with fingers then with mouse and keyboard - at least for me and I do not believe there would be many people who would have it otherwise). BG has quite tiny UI elements (e.g. selecting dialog choices drive me mad), selecting spells, inventory management is also something I was not excited about, targeting spell, removing traps in dungeons... basically every time I have to interact with the game.
Btw, you could read it already in my previous comment:
Really? Touch controls? I can imagine that stylus is bit better. I can also imagine that bigger screen helps. I really love BG but there are some UI features which I am not overexcited even with mouse+keyboard.
Could you please explain me what optimization for touch controls I have probable missed which makes the controls better?
Works just fine? How exactly have you selected dialog options with finger? What was your screen size? Again stylus will very likely help – still, I would never said BG is great for touch controls.
Yes. It can be done. It is not great but it can be done. Please read once again my comment:
I have not said it can not be played. I said it is not great.
Other than being smaller? Being smaller and being less accurate is the main part of being it less comfortable to control. It is actually the issue with touch controls: developers has to come up with solution which takes into account of being it smaller and less accurate. BG port is true to original game. Not much changes. I do not complain. Unfortunately BG interface is not great with small touch devices.
It is not that I do not like BG. I have already written:
