Press squad, and then press the create squad button. Choose what sort of ATs you would like to join matches as, such as tanker or pilots. Simple simple!
Well there is a server browser. Instead of pressing random battle you just press the other button, namely find mission. There you can see every battle going on and you can queue for some, or join directly for others. I highly recommend using the find mission button so you can choose battles without tanks or planes if you don't want to fight against that.

You both que as Infantry and hope that there are planes in the match you get into. Provided he has an infantry character still.
then there is an option to invite another player but it costs points and needs increasingly more points per person
