Asking because my infantryman is a medic.

I think that in general, no, they did not carry a weapon.
Something about the geneva code.

Although, I think it was optional.
I think some felt the need to carry a weapon for self-defense, while others might have prefered to not carry any weapons, as to not be mistaken for being hostile, and to be seen as "defenseless" just trying to attent wounden soldiers.

I know that the Japanese soldiers totally flipped this and actually opened fire on medics with everything they got, just to show how ruthless they were and bring fear to their enemies.

Your call, but I guess you could choose something in between.
Like, equip a pistol with just 1 clip, and let the rest of the loadout be specified for dealing with wounded comrades only.

As far as gameplay? Not sure people care that much that you're the "medic", most people carry at least 1 bandage if not they probably have heavy set silver / gold.

Pure medic, something in between, or Combat medic, all-in-all, you'll get shot at in H&G regardless.

Paratrooper-medics would occasionally use a FG42. They were "elite-infantry" in the second half of the war, but Reto dosn't want you to have the gun for your Inf.

Overall, noone expects you to stay historically accurate. I have a medica character with a unmodded MG 42 and use it like a defensive SMG.

Combat medics would be basic soldiers with additional training in healing.

So basically anything that isn't a specialist is RP. So no MG, Anti tank, mines etc. Rifles, SMG, pistols are fine.
But who cares about RP in H&G ? Go for what you want.

From my understanding/reading about it all basic infantry was trained to use weapons including Medics . The Genva Convention only applied while wearing Medic insignia and garb eg.Helmet & armband etc. To get around not carrying weapon when they felt the GC was being ignored they could opt to take medic garb off but would be open game. Apparently this was rare. Any GI could administer First Aid at his own risk. 1949 Geneva convention loosened the no weapon rule abit. Regardless, I agree Its only a game. :steamhappy:

Me and this guy speaks the truth, yet OP has seen too many movies and want to RP H & G.
Maybe at the age of 31, it's time to "hang up" my gaming gloves.

Ofcourse not, MG42s and MG34s were given to designated "machine gunners" you can't have the medic be the one giving suppressing fire and also running into the combat doing field dressings.
