So you can check out yourself with which weapon you feel better with.
That way, you can switch solders mid-match, to suit the current situation.
Mid-match loadout swapping is unlikely to ever be a thing in H&G, and the game is designed around owning numerous soldiers per faction instead. Unfortunately, the grinds are rather exessive when grinding several soldiers, especially if you plan on grinding a soldier for every weapon type and role. (Which, while providing the highest degree of versatility in a match, is very much a pain to earn.)
Personally I would stick with the M1G, but as Cowman said the grease gun is a little easier for beginners.
If you do decide to go the SMG route, add a spring and trigger to your gun (full ROF), you can take these mods off and put them on newer SMG's (so no waste of credits)
