1) Rank XP.
Only works for the character that has the assault teams equipped. This is by far the fastest way to earn rank xp on soldiers. This is because you don't actually have to play the game yourself, but just send in assault teams in games that gets played. It's also the only pracitical way to get soldiers beyond rank 15.
2) Warfunds.
Every time a soldier from your assault team destroys / kills something, you get warfunds. Keep in mind that warfunds earnings are randomized, so sometimes the other commanders, who have assault teams in the battle, gets all the warfunds.
3) Assault team XP.
Each time your assault team participates in a battle that gets played, it will gain either 30 or 5 xp, depending on victory or loss. Assaul team xp can be used to upgrade the AT further.
4) Ribbon XP.
I believe certain ribbons also get xp from assault teams. Useful for the "charismatic leader badge".
In addition to all this, assault teams can also help your faction win the war, if used correctly.
- If your AT's fight in a battle, the soldier that owns them gets battle xp for the battle ribbon progression (unlocks charismatic leader). If your faction wins a war that a soldier's AT's participate in, the soldier gets xp for war victory progression (unlocks command points)
- Also, your AT's can help you enter a battle that you might want to participate in on the war map (I think that's still a thing). AT owners in a battle have higher priority to join the battle... i think.
