They don't play in the fps.
They don't make ANY credits at all, only warfunds for the rts IF the assault teams you assing to him are able to make profit because of the players that use his resourses in the war map.
All weapons, vehicles and stuff owned by the general character (if he was a promoted soldier and NOT an academy trained general) go to the depot to be tranfered to any other soldier that ALREADY unlocked the access to that item.
Generals are "not worthy" for 99% of the player base.
Otherwise they cant play the Guy.
If you just want to spawn a few ATs, get some warfunds etc. and move them around on the map you don't even need a general. Medium - High ranking soldiers can command ATs as well.
I think the xp bonus you refer to, is by just playing war matches for which you do not even need AT (assault teams).
