Bombardment? Can't seem to?!?
I can't seem to destroy a planets' population from space.

The only option appears to be invasion! I can't waste a heap of population for this each time I want to wipe a planet out!

And it seems I can't loose invasion! Is there a bug?

Is that correct or am I missing something?

There is no planetary bombardment in the game. You can battle ships in orbit and invade. That's is all. There is no bug, this is how the game plays.

Planetary bombardment is an option Invasion but you still have to Invade

If you mean planet killers they will make it into the game at one point, but they are very late game techs. Why do want to be so mean and kill everything!!!!!

I vant to todally destrvoy Dhose Raging Infidels!!!!

I suppose it is a quick and easier way to destroy an opposing empire!
You could bombard the planet, to make it easier to invade, or just bombard it til there is nothing left!

Mind you, if there was stronger resistance to invasion, the need for bombardment might be greater!

Strategically, I may not have the population to pack transports at the moment but want to clear enemy planets to balance influence or the like.

From a more role playing perspective, a custom faction may have any number of reasons to want to wipe instead of invade. Whether it's Exterminatus or Base Delta Zero or whatever, the idea of a total wipe of a planet's populace is virtually a staple of sci-fi.

That is exactly the reason why invasion is required. Being able to just nuke planets with any fleet is to easy. (It's also possible to make planets very very resistant to invasion, but it's rarely worth doing)

Though i am not opposed to making planet killers that work similar to transports and are used up in the attack.

Correction - They will make it back into the game if they can find a place for them and a means of balance.

Yeah I hear you! I suppose some sort of bombardment might be nice! And Balanced would be good too.

You know what might be a better idea: Blockade!!
Allow military ships blockade planets to stop their economy adding to their empires values... or their industry from going to their shipyards or the research from contributing!! This would be a good idea! It means you could essentially lock down a planet! Just a thought!
