Ability/Trait Points Custom Factions
I feel dumb. Been looking for a few hours now and cant find a way to increase starting race ability and trait points for custom factions.

Maybe this has been hit on and I cant find the post but would really like to be able to have no limits in my creation.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

You can use the console cheat to give your self a kick start....:spyplant:

The 5/2 system is there to balance the factions (though how well it does this is another matter), so there's no off-switch that will just let you spend whatever you want. In the case of traits, allowing more might also cause problems with tech tree generation.

Modding the game might work around this, but you'd be better off asking about that in the Modding and/or Workshop forums.

I don't think you can change the limits but you can mod one trait have the effect of 10 traits...
pick something that is about useless, like 'angry' and hack away, or try to add a new one.

You'd probably want a new trait unless you wanted to boost the Xraki as well. Incidentally, I finally figured out a mod to the angry trait that actually makes sense. I simply inverted the Needy ability so that an Angry civ gets a +2 morale boost for every other civ that's furious with them. Between that and a second free ship I'm going to call it balanced.

GalCiv3GlobalDefs.xml You can mod that file to increase the available trait and ability points...NOT the original but a copy of the original placed in the Mods directory. I've done it and it works fine.

Yup. What they said:steamthumbsup:
Can anyone help me with this? I modified the GalCiv3GlobalDefs.xml and saved it to my \My Games\GalCiv3\Mods and to my \My Games\GC3Crusade\Mods and when I try to build a custome race it is still at the standard 5 and 2 points. I can only assume that my modification isn't working but I would like to know where I went wrong. As I was only modifying 2 numbers I left it with the same name or should I have renamed the file?

I did enable mods in game yeah. I wanted to do something simple first then work on doing something more difficult but I couldn't get this to work.. From what I have read if I am just modifying a few numbers I should make a copy and modify that but leave if with the same name and place into my mod folds which I have done but nothing changes so I am not sure why
you not really need a copy. its only simplier to remove it without installing the whole game again. mod-files overwrite the original files. so if you remove the mod files, the original is active again. but you should better ask at the official galciv forum. there r way more modders who can specifically help you.

Actually he does need to make a copy of the original file then edit that copy and add it to his mods folder. When the mod is enabled it only uses the modded file not the original file. It reverts back to the original file when mods are disabled or deleted. File copied also needs to be renamed to make it easier for the game to use the copied, edited file in the mods folder and not the original file when the mod is enabled and game is running.

Airmaster should the mod file be in both the vanilla and the Crusade mod folder?
As poster said it was put in both could that cause a prob?

Here's what Old Spider had to say and he is a very experienced modder.

MyGames/GalCiv3/Mods isn't enough. You need to create a folder in Mods that has a name you can remember. Then you need to create a folder in it named Game. The copy of the GalCiv3GlobalDefs.xml file goes in the game folder.

You also need to use the correct GalCiv3GlobalDefs.xml file. There is one for the base game, another for the Intrigue expansion and another for the Retribution expansion. The folders for the expansions are in the DLC folder of the base game.

Mercenary is saying they put the mod in the Crusades folder not Intrigue or Retribution

Do you have Retribution?
Read the last post by Airmaster about what Old Spider stated.
If you don't have Retribution take your mod out of Crusades and place it in Intrigue, to see if that helps.
If you have all the DLC put your mod in the Base, Intrigue and Retribution Mod files.
