Avast is CRAP! When I used it they put out a bad update that forced me to have to reformat my hard drive. I will never ever use Avast again.
This problem has been going on for 5 years and they say they will fix it and the never do.

I speak from experience as a former Avast User. Five solid years having this issue and it continues to keep happening does not make Avast a reputable AV maker Free or not.
This is all I'm saying.
+1 to Eftwyrd...
+1 to Yarlen -> Thanks for pinging them
To all of you freaking out over false positives, they happen with Heuristic scanners. You know, like how your email provider or client will put some emails in the spam/junk folder. Avast has not been the greatest since it started the whole "notification" ads, but it's not junk. Heuristic scanning has it's drawbacks, but to be honest I almost never get false positives and haven't had an issue with virii in my 10-ish years working with Avast
You've been lucky.
