I heard they stopped making their required payments and there was the massive CEO issues. I believe that the console revenue simply wasn't up to snuff and they were able to end the license due to financial stipulations.

And no, I don't think Marvel made nearly enough money when it was shut down.

It stinks, but that's what it is. Disney has no issues with canceling games that aren't profitable enough.

I am going to expand on most of what was said above.

Firstly, the game was NEVER profitable. Several devs, and Brevik, said multiple times on twitch, reddit, the official forums, and discord that even at its best the game barely broke even. (breaking even IS NOT making a profit) For 2/3's of the games lifespan Gazillion was running the game at a loss. This put the company further and further into debt with each month the game was live.

Next is the licensing issues. Gazillion had to pay X amount of money upfront and then Y amount of money every fiscal quarter to maintain the Marvel license. Brevik and other devs have said on discord that the company was repeatedly late in making the licensing payments. This happened so many times, that at one point, Disney/Marvel threatened to revoke the license.

With the game not making a profit and the company going even further into debt, Gazillion started looking for outside investors to help stay afloat. Gazillion did not want to get rid Brevik. Dorman, the new CEO, was part of the investor deal. The investors would give them an infusion of capital but only if they installed Dorman as CEO. Brevik never wanted to be CEO, when they first started development of Marvel Heroes all he wanted was to be Design and Development Lead, Gazillion kind of forced him into the CEO position. When Dorman came Brevik didn't want to work with him as Co-CEO and he said he would never work under Dorman. So Brevik asked to be let out of his contract with Gazillion and they agreed.

Once Dorman took over at Gazillion he went to Disney/Marvel to negotiate a new agreement for a console version of Marvel Heroes. I don't know all the details of the agreement but the basic jist was that the revenue of the console versions combined with the current revenue of the PC version would be high enough to put the game back on track profit wise. Disney/Marvel agreed but under the condition that if they miss a single payment for any version of the game then Disney/Marvel has the right to pull the plug on the whole thing.

Around August of 2015 the higher ups at Gazillion told the devs to stop talking to players on the official forums, but did not tell them why. In late September of 2015 Gazillion missed their Q3 license payment for the PC version, Disney/Marvel began to file the first Cease and Desist order for development of the PC version. This is when serious rumors of Gazillion losing the license first started popping up. Dorman went back to Disney/Marvel and paid out the license for the PC version until the end 2016. He kind of had to, it was the only way to stop Disney/Marvel from pulling the plug right then. Gazillion missed their Q3 2016 payment for the console versions and Disney/Marvel said "That's it, when your current license agreements end we are not going to renew."

This lead to the first announcement that Marvel Heroes on PC would permanently shutdown at the end of December 2016, and the console version would shutdown sometime in 2017. Dorman went back to Disney/Marvel and basically said "If you're not going to renew the contract, then we don't have to pay out what we have left on the current one." This was his idea of "playing hardball" and trying to bluff/push Disney/Marvel into renewing the contract. Disney/Marvel responded by pulling the license for everything and killing the game right then.

This lead to the second announcement that both versions of the game would be closing down near the end of November 2016.

I know some of you are curious how I know this stuff. Two days after the game closed Brevik, Asros, Michael Mayhem, and a few other devs that were active on the forums were on the Marvel Heroes discord channel with several players that were active from the community (myself included). We spoke for several hours, mostly the ex-devs talking and us listening. We spoke about the game, the company, and all the struggles and issues that went on during the game's life-cycle. If there was a NDA for the ex-devs it really didn't matter. Everyone that worked at Gazillion was fired with no severance and no paid time off the same day the game was shutdown, and the company itself closed down soon after.

the way things usually go is companys loan there copyrights out via contract
when said contract ends it either gets renewed or stays ended unlisting each game tied to it.

or is this the marvel deciding to end an majority of there videogames?

If I remember correctly game was considered not rental.
It were not generating enough income to sustain itself.

I spended on it like 20 dollars and played for 70++ hours.
I think I would spended more if not infinity points system. I disliked greatly that there is no limit to it and somebody who grind 20 hours per day (or more realistically shares account with 3 friends), buys xp poions and started to play earlier will always have stronger character than me.

Google the CEO, that's why. Disney has a strict family friendly policy. Gazillion tried to hide the stuff their CEO had done, he changed his name slightly thinking that would be enough to fool the Mouse. It wasn't. Disney pulled the licenses, the money people demanded payment immediately and the company went into receivership, everything was seized and auctioned off to pay the debtors.

Didn't Gaz fold to Trillion though? Couldn't they just transfer the license?

Trillion bought the game assets after the fact, the license had already been pulled. They made vague noises about being open to working with previous partners of Gazillion's but stated they were using the software to improve their current games. They sent out an email to all Marvel Heroes players inviting them to join said current games. Then no news for a while, then it emerged they'd sold the assets on. Somebody else might know more about that part. They never outright said they wanted to revive the game and only dropped hints that were along the lines of maybe, one day, in the future before they moved the assets on. The cynical side of me wonders if they just wanted to see if they could scoop up any of the player base. That's just idle wondering though and has no basis in anything.

The game was profitable, Disney were being the greedy £$£42$""3$ they are were looking for an excuse to pull the rights, and sell them on again. They found an excuse in an abuse case linked to the CEO. They pulled the rights and sold them on not caring about the customer. Disney at this stage are essentially skynet. They have no feelings what so ever and every decision is made by a robot.

It's not even an excuse, they have a "family friendly behaviour" clause in their contracts, they don't associate with people they think will damage their brand, Gaz knew that, still made him CEO, tried to lie to Disney and hide who the guy was. They gave Disney no choice.

What? Am I forgetting it? No because that didn't happen. That's not how companies work, Disney has zero say in who runs anything they don't own, leasing a company the rights to make a game doesn't make that company Disney property. Gazillion appointed him. He was already on the board of directors and they voted for him to be CEO.

David Brevik warned them all about the guy who took over as CEO, they didn't listen. The guy worked with him on Hellgate London and he said he screwed them over on that game too.
