Designing a Half-Life Rp Map
How to make this entertaining, while still making it feel like Half-Life? Here’s my proposition.

The map would consist of duties that each role would have to take on. Pre Resonance Cascade the military would not be an issue and Xen Exploration would be the main priority of Scientist (Though other tasks can be made for those who simply want to sit around working in the Black Mesa Complex). A new faction would have to be introduced in order to give the Black Mesa Security some PvP combat, though scientists would have a more PvE combat experience while exploring Xen.

We know we can utilize button triggers, moveable object puzzles, and mixing the two gives us great possibilities. Therefore, giving us room for creating entertaining tasks for Scientists and Engineers (Gus!).

Somehow we would need to separate security clearances creating a feeling of importance between scientists and security guards (possibly engineers), as they would have to rely on one another in order to gain access to certain areas.

Npc’s could easily be strategically placed in order to bring an immersive environment to the map without being obstructive to the map’s gameplay.

Hazardous conditions, such as steaming vent pipes, leaking radioactive barrels, and flooded areas (as well as more Rp oriented things such as sparking computers) could give engineers a real place in Black Mesa, being the ones to repair these conditions. We could use the same technique as security clearance in order to restrict engineers to being the ones allowed to turn the valves or other interactions necessary to clean up these messes.

So, Scientists solve puzzles, experiment on crazy experiments we can come up with, and experiment with crystals in order to create portals, effectively allowing the HEV Scientists to explore Xen. Engineers have tasks they must carry out in order to keep the environment from falling apart and killing everyone. So, what use are all the Barney Calhouns running around?
We need an anti-black mesa faction, possibly even only one player. My proposal for this; a scientist, or a couple scientists even, snap (possibly because Gordon Freeman decided to come to work late as usual so they have an enormous load of work on their hands). Now they are focused on sabotaging the experiments of the other scientists, in order to unleash the forces of Xen upon their fellow colleagues. Disguised as scientists the Black Mesa Security has to get the situation under control, all the while maintaining their necessary posts and opening doors they only have security clearance to open. Not to mention, if the mad scientists succeed, the Black Mesa Security are going to have their hands full.

That’s not to mention all the other nonsense they’ll have to deal with from trolls. Trolls are going to be present, and that gives the security something else to do.
There’s a lot of work to be done here. I’m not experienced in any modding nor mapping but am willing to learn. I figured I’d throw the idea out here though.

this isn't really the game for that, garry's mod has plenty of HL rp maps though, from black mesa complex and such to the hl2 world, there's a lot of good ones and RP servers

I've been playing these games for years Plutia :). I posted this on both Garry's Mod and Sven Coop Discussions. Just wanted to get some eyebrows raised on anyone who might be interested in working on such a project. Obviously Sven Coop would be extremely limited on how entertaining the map could be.

Also concering other RP maps of Garry's Mod. This would be set within the traditional atmosphere of Black Mesa. Obstacles, duties, and any problems their equipment may encounter would be considered using Half-Life, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force. The idea popped in my head when running around the intro of Blue Shift wondering what other things Barney could be useful for before he went down that terrible elevator.

To anyone saying that this is not a game for that, you miss the whole point of modding :>
And I like the idea of Half-Life RP :>

I'm saying sven's toolset and mods that are already out don't correspond to roleplaying, meanwhile gmod already has an established RP community, and the tools needed for the experience.

Alright, but why not to try it if it may be possible :>?

Sounds a little like bringing a "Space Station 13" scenario vibe to Half-Life.

While it sounds interesting and potentially feasible - perhaps enough to justify an effort - it is true that getting a more fully-featured and replayable RP experience is much more easily done around the GMod area of things. So I'm not sure how much interest you'd be able to get from the community when the GMod side is still open to quite a lot of people.

Interestingly enough this thread is the only one with replies (the other being exactly the same, though on the Garry's Mod Discussions). And though it might be easier to do in Gmod I feel as though Sven would be a more nostalgic atmosphere (Both in textures and in gameplay) for this kind of map.

Let's not forget The Specialists was also modded for RP.

And also playable for people with old PCs :>

Well. Tomorrow I'll begin the learning curve on map making. From what I've read it's one of the best editors with a fairly easy learning curve so I've decided to just give it a shot. I'm imagining recreating an area with elements for scientist as in the beginning of half life, with the security elements and "facility self sufficiency" atmosphere of the tram ride/intro of blue shift. Will start designing some puzzles for it as well (not on the editor of course, yet).

would this be a round based type thing? perhaps you could design it so that roles are selected before a round starts, and have players of that round in a room with a button to activate it + round settings (much like bm_sts)? i'm getting a heavy space station 13 type vibe, too

gmod's serious RP community has degraded to a point it probably can't be saved, and all that's good left has to be scraped together.

There's a few maps I've played that allow you to select a 'class' by walking through a portal in the beginning and it gives you weapons at start. I think that would be a neat way of doing it, themed better of course than some hallways as it needs some immersion to it, though the same concept.

I'm not sure what you mean by space station 13 but the map should be similiar to maps played in half life, opposing force, and blue shift, as it would be taking place in Black Mesa.

Also I think it would be neat to have some above ground areas. Such as in the beginning of blue shift...
