No, they certainly didn't flinch when they were called upon that title, tbh I don't know much about how they interperet it. Buh, I don't actually have anything to add here.
But yeah, Saints Row and Just Cause are completely different games, they share certain elements but really there not up for comparison. Sometimes I'll feel like playing Saints Row, sometimes I'll feel like playing GTA, or Just Cause, or anything.
(I do think SR intended to go for a 'second version' of GTA when they started though)
Actually, it is not even fair to compare these games. Get both and enjoy both. They're both stellar
I hated GTA IV with a passion because I felt it split with what GTA did best, which was awesome sandbox fun, with the emphasis on fun. So now, as far as I am concerned, games like Just Cause 2 and all the Saint's Row games are, in essence, the new GTA!
That said, GTA V is a phenomenal game. I have it on the PS3 and Rockstar did an AMAZING job on it in so many ways. I still don't think it has the raw, unbridled fun factor of Just Cause 2 or any Saints Row game, and I doubt very much I enjoy it as much as I will enjoy JC3, but for anyone who hasn't played GTA V and are just rattling off negative opinions based on GTA Snore (IV) you are missing out on an awesome game, that might just hold you over until JC3 comes out. ;)
It hasnt been released 3 times over like GTA 5.
And ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Explosions are better in Just Cause 2, so its ganna be the same for 3.
GTA is ok though.
GTA V is more mimicking real life and lets you do a lot of things that are just...things (like singing in the shower in MP...I wish I knew everyone could hear it before I did it).
JC3 is a great sandbox game but it's not really an easy game, which might discourage people who don't really like experimenting with gameplay mechanics and finding new ways how to do stuff. It's clear from the often asked question: Can I duck? Can I hide behind a wall? We don't want people to do whatever they are used to in other games. We are challenging their gaming creativity. And if they dare to try and keep going, then they are often surprised what great things they can do.
I don't like comparing JC3 to GTA V because they are very different productions/developments.
A few things in response to your post:
GTA V does often feel like it is mimicking real life, BUT it is still a helluva lot less realistic than the horribly boring GTA IV! You can actually do a lot of amazing things in GTA V that would be very difficult to do in real life, but I take your point of it being "more of a simulation" than anything the Just Cause series is shooting for.
You said that Just Cause is not an easy game, and I have to completely disagree. Though you are talking about JC3 and my only experience is with JC2. So unless you guys are ramping up the difficulty of JC3, which I hope you're NOT, then I would actually say that Just Cause 2 is WAY EASIER than GTA V.
GTA V, at its best is incredibly well done, and a lot of "serious gameplay fun" with tremendous comedic story fun. Unfortunately, for me at least, GTA V is not what I would call a "laugh out loud while you play..." game like JC2 and all the Saint's Row games are.
What I mean is that the majority of those "laugh out loud" moments in GTA V come not from playing but watching and listening. In other words, the writing, dialog, caracter development, and story is where the truly funny moments in GTA V come from.
This is, quite honestly, where GTA shines. That and its "technical superiority."
The writing in Saint's Row is good, but not great. The writing in JC2 is downright awful. I am a novelist trying to get published and I would be embarassed to write anything as poor as JC2. lol BUT I don't play games for the story. I am not what you would call a "passive gamer," where I get all gooey over the story UNLESS the gameplay is also awesome.
Put a gun (or in Rico's case an RPG) to my head and ask me what I prefer, and I will tell you I will take extraordinary gameplay over story, and certainly over "realism" any day of the week. GTA V is, in my honest opinion, technically superior to JC2 in every single way.
But I enjoy JC2 much more, because the game is literally built for fun!
GTA V, because of the "realism" built in, is actually a much more difficult game than JC2. Try to ditch your wanted level in GTA V and at the highest levels, it is doable, but takes so long and so much work, it gets boring. JC2 ALWAYS gives you a clear path of escape and an easy way to get to a cool down area where you can stay out of the line of sight of any of Panau's soldiers.
I can spend HOURS fighting against the soldiers, helicopters, boats, and army vehicles in JC2. This is one of the most FUN things about Just Cause, is the ability to stay alive and just cause ongodly amounts of mayhem! Try the same thing in GTA V and see how long you last. lol Three minutes before the law guns you down if you try to stand your ground?
For me, with all the amazing and fun gameplay mechanics in JC2, it blows the doors off of GTA V. BUT you simply cannot dismiss the fact that Rockstar developers are master crafstmen. The only complaints I have about "the new and more realistic GTA" is that they are not stupid enough, at least the gameplay isn't.
The entire f*cking game just takes itself so danmed seriously and is filled with pomposity, OCD gaming elisism, and a sense of overbearing restriction at times.
But this is what Rockstar wants. They seem to have some kind of a realism fetish.
Thank God for developers like Avalanche and Volition who make sandbox games where the writing isn't the king of the game AND the gameplay is NOT subordinated to the writing!
I agree with some of your points. But when we were doing playtests with casual gamers, they needed more time to grasp the context and game mechanics of Just Cause because it doesn't use the 'normal' gameplay mechanics as a lot of other games people are used to. Which for some might be a fun challenge, for some it might be a no-go because they don't have the patience or motivation to keep trying.
They are not only great craftsmen but also had very good budget to tap into. GTAV has one of the largest productions up to date and that's something that allows you to do a lot of things games with a smaller production can't do.
But again, comparing JC to GTAV is so tricky and I think completely unnecessary. I see why people are tempted to do so but at the end of the day, people can play both and find something in them for themselves. Or pick just one. Either way is fine. :)
