Moved game to SSD, worse performance
Hey,

I've got AMD Radeon 285 and originally installed it on my old external hdd. The load times were long and i thought maybe it was a performance bottleneck with the hdd. So i moved it to my internal SSD drive. Yeah sure the load times are better, but performance is even worse.

Before it dropped maybe to 17 fps in wost cases. Now it drops to 5 FPS and each time i turn 180 degrees everything stutters as hell.

What the hell is going on here?

Is your pagefile on the SSD or HDD? It should help setting your swap file to the SSD. Here's some info from MS on this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-virtual-memory-size#1TC=windows-7
Obvoiusly you want Windows to use the fastest drive (SSD) for virtual memory (swap space). But with JC3 there's just some strange things going it seems based on the memory related problems some people are having.

nope, you should put the game on the SSD, not the pagefile. If your HD is that slow, then maybe its time to replace it.

Not of the games I have here even reach 8GB including Widnows programs/services.
GTA V @ 1440p is not even reaching 7GB.

Why would you put the pagefile on the slower drive? Why not put it on the SSD? A pagefile is used when an app runs out of RAM, Windows swaps to the pagefile, back and forth as needed reading and writing data the app (game) needs in real-time. So again, why use the slower drive?

Totally agree, why do people say NO to pagefiles on SSDs? Makes no sense. I have a hunch low RAM systems that are getting bad stuttering may be swapping (paging) to conventional HDDs. SSDs are much faster and just might improve stuttering issues on some systems in JC3. But that aside, pagefiles should be on the fastest drive in the system...it's Virtual Memory after all and having slow access to it will only cause slower performance..why is that preferred by some I wonder?

Because SSDs have a lower amount of rewrites in comparison to HDDs. Please do your research. :/

SSDs are HDDs replacements, you do trade some longevity for speed, that's the nature of the technology. Why on earth would I buy an SSD if I wasn't going to use it? My SSD replaced my HDD. So by your logic (Bottybitter7) I should buy a HDD to for handling virtual memory/page file taks since it has higher rated IO operations? It makes zero sense, it really doesn't. If you are worried about using up your SSD then don't buy one and buy a conventional HDD. I bought my SSDs for speed, they are my system drives and that's what they are designed for. People buy SSD for speed and again, they are designed as system drives, HDD replacements.

Denuvo and gameworks infected. No wonder it's performing like pure garbage.

Most users are not changing longevity for speed. Most users will buy a bigger ssd decades before the write capacity is used up. This was maybe true for Gen 1 ssd's of decades ago, but it is no longer a concern.

Yep, when I looked at specs for the Samsung EVO 850 drives I installed in my desktop and laptop, it was similar to analyzing pixel life on plasma screens, when you do the math there is simply no issue with longevity for most people, especially tech geeks, such as gamers, who will be upgrading over time. This "no pagefile on SSD" argument seems rooted in old times and definitely is NOT sound advice for anyone who uses their PC for gaming. Many of us PC gamers build their own systems, carefully chose components to get the fastest possible performance for our money. It's insane to then cripple a gaming rigs memory performance by not using an SSD for pagefile/virtual memory IMHO.

The 120GB version of the 850 EVO has been rated for 40GB writes every single day for 5 years straight - That's 75TB in total. Having your pagefile on an ssd is the most logical choice these days. You wanted speed so you got an ssd. Then it's sort of stupid to cripple that speed by using your sloooooow hdd as cache.

I've had the 850 EVO 120GB for 6 months now, I've installed a ton of games, Windows 10 reinstalled like 5 times and my pagefile is on it as well. In total a whopping 1.2TB has been written. Oh my, "only" 73.8TB left.. Yikes .. lol

A lot of people believe their SSD will be over used and wear out. Personally I have my pagefile set up on a 4Gb RAMdrive. More reliable and a zillion times faster :)

I have been saying since launch for people to turn their pagefile back on and those who did saw a much improved performance(surprised it wasn't stikkied or put in the fixes stikky). Fallout4 and dying light have the same requirement. It seems that games that stream in assets during play create a lot of modified memory, that memory has to be written out to the pagefile or windows can't free up the RAM which eventually causes an out of memory CTD or in many peoples cases stuttering.

With 1st gen SSD's and they would be correct. They were faster than a regular hdd but also seriously lacking the endurance we have today (plus trim and garbage collection). It's really not something people should be concerned over anymore. Use it and abuse it because it will most likely outlast your current and next build. If you do a lot of heavy writing such as with video editing, there's also ssd's for that these days; Like the 850 Pro which has an absolutely insane amount of endurance plus a 10 year warranty.

So .. Use it and abuse it! :steamhappy:

i have the same issue but only with friday the jason game, tell me what is pagefile?, i dont know that it is?

ok in virtual memory it says, "automatically manage paging file size for all drives" it is on.

then below in the C disk (ssd) says :managed by the system, on the 2 hdds i have it says:none, is all this ok or should i change something?
