Just Cause 3

Steam Controller is best controller.
Before anyone bothers with "KB and Mouse Hur Dur..." 3rd person action that involves more than just running around on foot and shooting stuff = gamepad. End of story. KB and Mouse suck for this style of game. They might be functional and you can use them to play the game without too muich difficulty, but they aren't optimal in this case. Same goes for most driving games or melee focused 3rd person games. A gamepad is better than KB and Mouse in these particular genres of game most of the time. Deal with it.

[Yes, a racing wheel is better than either for driving.]

I have a PS4 controller, a wired Xbox 360 controller, and an Xbox 1 controller that are all hooked up to my PC. Not all at once, but I am able to freely switch between them easily.

So far, for Just Cause 3, the Steam Controller has beaten them all.

Those two underside buttons make all the difference here, but the touch pad is also, weirdly, the most accurate aiming method for this game. It does not suffer from the weird sensitivity issue the game has with stick aiming.

It does take some adjustment and I did rearrange several of the buttons to get it to that point, but it's hands down been the best option so far.

The only issue that has cropped up was that tank turrets aim was super slow. Every other mounted turret on a vehicle has worked fine, but tanks were just sluggish to aim. At least in the limited experience I had with them. I haven't seen one in a while and I've done some tweaking since, but the Steam Controller has been the most consistently decent controller for the game.

Seriously, if you have a Steam Controller give it a shot. It takes a little getting used to, but it really does work out better than the other gamepads for this particular game. It usually doesn't excell at shooters like this, but this time it's definitely worth a try. Just give it a little time and tweak it some to find a good setting.

This might change after they patch the game and improve the controls some, but at the moment it's the best way to play as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting, I agree this game is better with a controller as well but it's all personal preference. Works pretty well with a 360 controller but there that odd sensitivity is an issue.

I'm new to the steam controller. Only picked it up yesterday. It's working fine in all games except JC3.

In JC3 all the buttons seem to work BUT the LEft Stick doesn't move me. I can traverse the menu with it when I pause but my character won't move.

same issue here as SendMoreCops: I can't move Rico! No walking or swimming possible! The stick itself works fine in the menue but not in the gameplay. Any ideas on what to do?

its funny that, its also slightly cheaper than f710 and equavelant xbox controller, well it was a bit cheaper last time i checked. my friend report very good things about this controller. i d buy it if i knew, because last week i replaced my broken f710 this month

Are you launching the game from Big Picture mode?

It's kind of annoying but the Steam Controller works best when you do. You might need to select a profile for it to use in the Steam Menu that you can access with the Steam Button on the controller face.

You're probably going to need to do some tweaking. The default Mouse Like Joystick config works okay, but really needs some adjustment. Expect to do this with a lot of games for the Steam Controller FYI. That's both it's biggest strength and greatest weakness, it's very configurable, but also usually needs you to spend some time tweaking it to get it set up for a particular game.

Try out some of the user made configs and when you find one that works for you, mess around with it a little until it feels right. Then save it as a personal profile.

You can do all of this from the Big Picture settings menu that will pop up if you hit the steam icon button during gameplay when you launch from big picture mode.

can you share your control please? if you arent already done it. i tried the controller once but thought it was way too hard to aim porperly. even more with sniper (i love sniper)

something really wonky here. I tried now a couple of times in big picture mode and without. 2 times out of 7 the controller worked as intended. the other 5 times the left stick doesn't work at all in the game (it actually works in the game menue). don't really know what's going on. the controller works fine in rocket league for example...

I love this thing. It was a pain to get used too, but I spent $50 on it and soldiered on. Now I can barely touch my PS4 or Xbox 360 gamepads for PC gaming anymore.

It took a while, and I had to tweak, retweak, and tweak again to learn my way around the settings and what they did. Once I figured out just how much I could do with that little touchpad, mode shifting, and double tap functions I hit that moment of trying to figure out just how I managed to play some of these games with just the 360 or PS4 pad. Even that little touchpad on the PS4 seemed quaint and outdated.

The learning curve of this thing is a bit harrowing, but once you get past it and start to scratch the surface, I doubt many would go back.

I've had my Xbox 360 controller boxed up for a week now, and my PS4 controller has been sitting in a drawer in my desk for just as long. I recently realized I haven't missed them at all.

I'm converted, and it seems to confuse people who only try it for a short time. People who paid for it are a lot more willing to adjust to prevent that feeling of having wasted money, but people only with it for a short time are likely to scoff because it just feels wrong until you hit that eureka moment when everything clicks, and that takes a few days at least, possibly longer.

You have to get used to aiming with this thing. It's not instant. Kind of like when you were first learning how to use a normal gamepad. The Steam Controller is nice, but you do need to tweak it and get used to how it works. It has a learning curve and you have to unlearn what you have learned.

It does more right than it does wrong, but it's not perfect either. The pads do take some getting used to, and it takes a while to adjust to the underside triggers. They're amazing once you realize they are there, but can be awkward to deal with at first. Making big turns is a little more awkward as well, but not impossible to get used too. It's easy to over or under turn if someone is shooting you in the back, same with looking up and down.

I actually like it more for sniping. Close up shooting is what gives me the most trouble. Usually I do okay, but sometimes if an enemy is too close it's hard to spin to face them well enough to keep on target.

Don't forget to make use of the Mode Shift and double tap functions. They're much cooler than you'd think and very useful. Especially in games that support simultanious keyboard and mouse and gamepad controls, such as Just Cause 3.

I do have a public profile up for Just Cause 3, it's a mouse control scheme that lessens mouse sensitivity when the trigger is pulled all the way down.

As for the movement stick not working. It works 100% of the time for me. Check the settings for the profiles that aren't working and make sure it's set to the right control setting and not moved elsewhere.

You might also want to try binding it as buttons to WSAD and see if that works if the joystick isn't even if it's set right.

Otherwise I'm not sure what to say. It's worked perfectly fine for me in any game that has gamepad support. I'm not having that issue at all.

I usually like 360 controller for 3rd person games, but this one I am enjoying much more with mouse and keyboard. So much quicker and accurate to control the camera (flying, aiming guns and grapple with right mouse is so natural) with the mouse. Even driving is not half bad with keyboard.

I do want to get one of those Steam controllers though.

I just wish we could select which button prompts are shown. I have right pad set to mouse but the rest is mostly controller inputs so my on screen button prompts keep switching back and forth between showing me controller prompts or m&kb prompts.

Meh, i use mouse and keyboard for the running and gunning parts, and a Xbox controller for the driving and flying parts. Since the game can deal with input from both at the same time, there's no need to choose.

I am interested in that Steam controller too, seems like impressions are mostly positive?

My PS4 controller wont even work. Not in the big picture mode, not if you plug the rest out, not if I plug it ingame. srly help me
acefondu Dec 24, 2015 @ 6:29am
It doesn't support multiple inputs, that's the biggest issue with the game. I'd love to use the Steam Controller but whenever you switch from Mouse commands to Controller commands the game seizes up for a few seconds. It's infuriating and I can't use it.
