In JC3 all the buttons seem to work BUT the LEft Stick doesn't move me. I can traverse the menu with it when I pause but my character won't move.
It's kind of annoying but the Steam Controller works best when you do. You might need to select a profile for it to use in the Steam Menu that you can access with the Steam Button on the controller face.
You're probably going to need to do some tweaking. The default Mouse Like Joystick config works okay, but really needs some adjustment. Expect to do this with a lot of games for the Steam Controller FYI. That's both it's biggest strength and greatest weakness, it's very configurable, but also usually needs you to spend some time tweaking it to get it set up for a particular game.
Try out some of the user made configs and when you find one that works for you, mess around with it a little until it feels right. Then save it as a personal profile.
You can do all of this from the Big Picture settings menu that will pop up if you hit the steam icon button during gameplay when you launch from big picture mode.
It took a while, and I had to tweak, retweak, and tweak again to learn my way around the settings and what they did. Once I figured out just how much I could do with that little touchpad, mode shifting, and double tap functions I hit that moment of trying to figure out just how I managed to play some of these games with just the 360 or PS4 pad. Even that little touchpad on the PS4 seemed quaint and outdated.
The learning curve of this thing is a bit harrowing, but once you get past it and start to scratch the surface, I doubt many would go back.
I've had my Xbox 360 controller boxed up for a week now, and my PS4 controller has been sitting in a drawer in my desk for just as long. I recently realized I haven't missed them at all.
I'm converted, and it seems to confuse people who only try it for a short time. People who paid for it are a lot more willing to adjust to prevent that feeling of having wasted money, but people only with it for a short time are likely to scoff because it just feels wrong until you hit that eureka moment when everything clicks, and that takes a few days at least, possibly longer.
You have to get used to aiming with this thing. It's not instant. Kind of like when you were first learning how to use a normal gamepad. The Steam Controller is nice, but you do need to tweak it and get used to how it works. It has a learning curve and you have to unlearn what you have learned.
It does more right than it does wrong, but it's not perfect either. The pads do take some getting used to, and it takes a while to adjust to the underside triggers. They're amazing once you realize they are there, but can be awkward to deal with at first. Making big turns is a little more awkward as well, but not impossible to get used too. It's easy to over or under turn if someone is shooting you in the back, same with looking up and down.
I actually like it more for sniping. Close up shooting is what gives me the most trouble. Usually I do okay, but sometimes if an enemy is too close it's hard to spin to face them well enough to keep on target.
Don't forget to make use of the Mode Shift and double tap functions. They're much cooler than you'd think and very useful. Especially in games that support simultanious keyboard and mouse and gamepad controls, such as Just Cause 3.
I do have a public profile up for Just Cause 3, it's a mouse control scheme that lessens mouse sensitivity when the trigger is pulled all the way down.
As for the movement stick not working. It works 100% of the time for me. Check the settings for the profiles that aren't working and make sure it's set to the right control setting and not moved elsewhere.
You might also want to try binding it as buttons to WSAD and see if that works if the joystick isn't even if it's set right.
Otherwise I'm not sure what to say. It's worked perfectly fine for me in any game that has gamepad support. I'm not having that issue at all.
I do want to get one of those Steam controllers though.
I am interested in that Steam controller too, seems like impressions are mostly positive?
