I'm playing on a gamepad and it's a nightmare too :P .
The longer I push the analog to the left or right, the faster it turns and even when I let go it keeps turning for a little bit longer if I held it for too long.
Feels like I'm playing a hyper realistic space sim like space engine.
What do you mean?
I'm on a gamepad and I can reel in and then cancel the reel with B. Same button as parachute.
So I'm trying to get used to flying a helicopter.
I take off, press the A button and I end up getting off of the heli. I'm less than 20 feet from the ground so the heli is ontop of me. As soon I get out from being under it, it blows up and kills me :P
So far this one is actually pretty decent. But the lack of yaw movement is annoying.
It'd be cool if there were different camera options though. The camera always centers on the plane, and rolls with it. This is a cool and cinematic view, but it'd be cool if there was an option where the camera didn't roll with the plane.
It seems like the devs really wanted to make this game cinematic. It's cool, but not always what everyone wants!
Edit, nvm found out that planes have yaw mechanics. The button placement is just weird and uncomfortable
So they broke helicopters, but planes are good!
Yeah I miss alot of tooltips lol.
Sucks how it's X and B. It's pretty unccomfortable and makes me have to remove my hand from the right thumb stick in which I use to control my view.
Haven't tried JC3's flying, is it better or worse?
Just Cause 3 Heli Flying With Gamepad:
Left and Right bottom triggers are for controlling altitude.
Left Thumbstick forward and back is for forward and back movement. On some games you may have to control your altitude while moving, but not in this one.
Left thumbstick left and right is for banking/moving left and right.
As soon as you let go of the left thumbstick, your heli very quickly stops any form of motion.
Right thumbstick is for yawing/turning your heli into a UFO by constantly spinning 360 degrees very fast.
The controls are very arcady and simplistic. So simplistic and different from many of the games that have flight, that they become hard to use and control at first.
I literally kept crashing everytime I tried flying a heli. Then I realised that I had to disregard any of my flight knowledge from other games (even Just Cause 2) and had to accept that this game has super arcady flying.
Though many other helis could be different, the first 2 types of helis I flew felt like I was flying a kite with a rotor. They were so sensitive, and so fast that I didn't know how to control myself.
Watch this video I uploaded.
I lost control at 0:47 hue

My proposal is to reduce the initial sensitivity for all controls regarding aircraft: acceleration, roll, yaw, aim, pitch, etc. They accelerate way too quickly (planes take off in 20ft, helis shoot up into the air). Turning and yaw are so sudden that it is visibly jerking the craft. Maybe even have the helicoters continue cruising in the direction they were heading instead of slowing for no reason. For jets, the Fighter-Bomber has very smooth (because its slow) handling. The devs should have had the controls for this plane in mind when tuning the helicopters.
--Note: I don't think the controls need to be sluggish, but if the controls EASED the planes/helicopters into maneuvers the pilot wanted, we'd all be a lot happier. Also, slow them down please. There's no point to runways at this point.
