You're both right. It's not complicated: FoV = Field of View. It IS actually the camera distance in game because the camera distance is measured from the player's character.
The wider the FoV, the further the camera is away, it's that simple.
If you don't get it, turn on your cell phone camera, point it at the screen from a few inches away, then back up. Suddenly you can see more of the screen! It's magic! No, it's FoV - and camera distance.
A Field of View adjustment changes viewing angle a STATIONARY camera is capable of, up to 360 degrees both horizontally and vertically, effectively acting as our 'eyes' in FPS/TPS games.
I am. FOV is absolutely MANDATORY on ultrawide. This close is flat out unplayable.
That is true in a scenario of say playing Skyrim in first person but not in this scenario. It is hard to change the viewing angle of a game in third person without pulling the camera away from the player.
Yeah, I'm on a 29 inch and feel the same way.. I'm sure 34 inch is even worse.
It's always true, that's what a FOV is. Both FOV and camera distance exist in TPS's and people often confuse the two, primarily due to the translation of a 3d world to a 2d plane (monitor). However they are not the same, FOV is never camera distance.

fov still makes a huge difference in 3rd person games when the default is so damn low. You don't even have to raise it that much to get rid of the motion sickness that a low and zoomed in default can incur on a PC.
