Also, just as a tip which made it easier for me, don't let it free-swing at the end of a long tether behind you. Use TWO tethers on opposite sides connected to the two top back corners of your truck, and retract it all the way so it's just resting on the back of the vehicle. Turn it on, collect, then drive into the pit and turn it off to drop the bavarium for score.

k i ain't a rube so I'm using a controller but good to know that i apparently have to press some button to make it work

Mouse right click is the button for tether, so maybe try the equivalent for controller?
