Far Cry 4 is a fun first person shooter. It's basically literally the same as Far Cry 3 (seeing a trend here?), just with a vastly improved menu interface which makes crafting a lot more enjoyable than it was in FC3. The side content also feels more fleshed out compared to FC3's awkward minute long "side quests" with half-assed "plot twists" at the end. Overall it feels pretty good, and I recommend it if you haven't played FC3, or if you played FC3 but really enjoyed it and want more of it.
Mad Max is fun if you like driving around and liberating outposts with smash 'em up style combat a la the Batman Arkham games. It basically plays like one of those, but in the Mad Max universe. The main story is a bit weak and honestly not long at all, and I guess this is one of my weird gripes about the game... They did a fantastic job making each optional side location feel unique (even if there's just one collectible photograph at a chair overlooking a cliff, it's probably the only such chair at a cliff in the game). It's not necessarily anything fancy but it shows they took a lot of time developing the side locations. On the other hand... if you ignore the side content and just play the story, you're probably going to beat the game in 6-8 hours, but if you do what I did and focus a lot on the side content to maximize your upgrades, you're gonna be kinda lost on the main story since it's a really shallow and forgettable story.
I'm playing Just Cause 3 right now, I've enjoyed the series since the first game, and I'd say in the series, JC3 is the best one yet. They struck a really good balance between side content and main story content, so it doesn't feel like I'm going around trying to do an unrealistic and overwhelming amount of collectible hunting. Honestly the storytelling isn't that great in it, most of the missions that I've done so far feel like they're putting me into the introduction scenes like a minute after they've already started... It also does have some performance issues though (Nvidia recently released a hotfix for their cards that has helped, I don't know about AMD performance though).
Anyway, having played all of them, I'd say ...
- If you really, really love beat 'em up games (like the Batman Arkham series) and you really love doing side content (collectibles, liberating little outposts, etc.), Mad Max is probably the best choice.
- If you want a first person shooter with a fair amount of side content and a lengthier campaign, get Far Cry 4.
- If you want to have fun in a destruction sandbox where you can just fly around and basically have more free reign on how you complete your main mission of liberating the island, then get Just Cause 3.
and... I'd just recommend avoiding RTTR. I don't know, like I said, I enjoyed TR2013 but this was basically literally the same exact thing with a different story. I actually played Tomb Raider Anniversary afterwards (the original game on the second TR engine) and that was a million times more enjoyable...
I think i'll go for JC3 then! :D
