Always on DRM still?
Hi guys

I read a while ago JC3 had always on DRM - blocking you from the single player game if your internet goes down.

Is this still the case or has it been patched out of the single player game?

Thanks!

It never had always online DRM. It has to connect to the Internet once a month. If something goes wrong with your file permissions though it won't be able to remember that it has connected more recently, and you'll have to log on again.

Nope. You'll still have to wait a few minutes on launch to play, and when you lose connection you can't save nor open the PDA until your connection is restored. And yes, as ebkapalka pointed out, Denuvo AntiTemper DRM is being used.

Hmmm, thank you both for your replies.

I'm not so worried about Denuvo, Doom had that and it worked fine for me (I believe it's just been taken off that game now).

The connection is a worry though, will I still be able to play it in five years? Ah waiting minutes after launching is quite frankly stupid, hardly a customer friendly approach.

Keen as I am to play this (have 100% completion on JC2), I may wait a bit longer, or possibly not even bother.

Thanks again for your replies!

I also loved Just Cause 2, but this game is an entirely different scenario. There's the core of the game intact, and you can see that Avalanche NY was desperately trying to succeed in a sequel for the legendary JC2, but it just flopped on so many levels, most notably a technical one. I did talk to a few friends who were able to get the game running (at launch I ran at 11 FPS and half speed with missing terrain once and blasted/corroded sound every other time), and they just kind of said that it was okay until you started feeling the repitition.

I'll give it a chance when I have some kind of card in the future that can brute-force some decent performance, my R7 360 test maintained 30 FPS until it crashed while my R9 280 test was a mess.

Thanks again for the reply.

I think you've just sealed it for me...

I'll wait until at least it comes out in a pack with all the DLC for a bargain price in a sale. Happened with JC2, it'll happen with this one as well eventually. Then for it's problems, at least, it's cheap for a good blast through, the performance shouldn't be so much of an issue with the latest hardware and if it's not that great I won't be going back to it after completing so doesn't matter so much with the DRM.

The game always tries to connect to the JC 3 servers when you load it, but that's for the sake of the leaderboard statistics counter that runs continuously in the background, and yeah, if it loses the connection it will disrupt your game... continuously.

Unless you want to be continuously scored and rated agaianst friends and strangers as you play, you can block that with Windows Firewall easily enough. On launch the game will tell you it can't connect, but if you just select to 'go offline', it will never bother you again untl the next time you start the game. Steam, however, remains online, and you can continue with screenshots or whatever, if you want.

I've been playing it blocked with WIndows Firewall for almost all of my nearly 130 hours in the game, with no ill effects.

It's pretty much essential to do this. It's so annoying that it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every 5 minutes.

I wouldn't mind if it was my internet connecting that was dropping out.

Agreed. It's a shame, really, as in the beginning I was having fun competing against a couple Steam friends with all the things you get scored for, but I got to the point where I could no longer stand all the disruptions. My internet was always quite reliable and constant, but their servers are not.
