Fullscreen and resolution not working
Whatever i do, i cannot seem to enter fullscreen mode. The game is always in windowed mode when i start it up, and if i go to options and press 'fullscreen', the screen will just blink for a bit and do absolutely nothing.

The game also does not know how to scale with the resolution. Normally the game is at 1366 x 986 (or something) and when i set it to 1920 x 1080, the game just goes into fullscreen windowed, and zooming in on the top left corner.

This is what has worked for me and it even decreased the issues I had with tearing and stutter from last time I played the game to almost no issues at all this time.

First of all, it sounds fair that this game might need a bit more GB of memory than other games do to work in get it's best flow. It seems it has a bigger need for memory when checking the current values in a osd panel like Afterburner during gameplay. First I tested to run it with 8GB and the game used almost all of it after a few hours. Then I installed two more sticks so I reached 16GB RAM, = twice as much. After that the game didn't want to run so I had to send a report in make it open again. I guess it didn't recognized the hardware correctly from the saves or something didn't match. Anyhow, after it started to run again everything worked fine. The memory consumption now seems to get a bit higher than before but not more than a few hundreds of MB. Best of all is now that the system has more free memory to take from if it needs to, almost half of it. I'm comparing memory here now as how other devices works. They give usually the best speeds as less data they have to work with. An harddrive that's almost filled up, works usually slower.

When it comes to how the game scales on my 27" inches screen which has the native resolution of 2560x1440. The built in scaling feature doesn't seems to work like any other games I've used.
I can't say I've ever seen a game that has produced this amount of tearing and stutter before.
Do you know what I had to do in make it go away and get rid of it?

The thing was for me to run the game in a smaller resolution than the native resolution which the screen has and doing it in fullscreen. Motionblur seems to be a good take too. So if I use the setting in the game like 2560x1440. Then its tearing and stutter as soon as the camera starts to move around with the mouse. But if using a more common resolution in the gamesettings like 1920x1080 and letting the game run in fullscreen. Then it's like the graphics driver helps the tearing to smoothens out. Almost what's happening when you stretching out an image on your desktop that is a bit smaller than the screen. The tearing and the stutter just disappeared.

It's like when the game stretches out, it stabilizing the tearing.

I would check two things.
Now this haven't happened to myself so it sounds like something must be wrong with settings and stuff. Can confirm the issue with Alt+Tab though, that's a bit tricky to use from time to time.

1. Check your config files so they not set to "read only".
If they are, that would mean that the game might be prevented from write its own settings to it's files. They should be found in a subfolder inside C:\Users\Your name\Documents\Square Enix\Just Cause 3\Saves\0

Look for Square Enix inside My Documents.
Mine has the name "settings.json" and works to be opened with notepad for instance.
Right click the file and select properties to see if anything has been marked as read only.
If it has, just change it back so the checkbox is not marked anymore.

2. The last thing I would try is to let Steam verify the game cache so nothing has changed since the game was installed. Now I didn't said I wouldn't suggesting anyone from doing it because it sucks. It doesn't. Honestly it's a very helpful tool to use when games doesn't work and used it plenty of times myself. All credits to Steam! This can be done by right click on your game to the left, inside your Steam Library. Right click on Just Cause 3 in the list and select properties.

A new window should open up, watch out so it doesn't opens up where it's not visible.
Under the tab "LOCAL FILES" you will find a button with the name "VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES" Just hit the button and let the tool run until finished.

If lucky, it may sometimes make new updates to be downloaded too.

If a game window shows signs of different kinds of flicker and things when it starts, it might be an indication that things doesn't working correctly in the hardware/Windows OS/graphics driver. What's happens in that stage is that your driver/firmware and hardware switching from a "flat" quite power efficient 2D dimensional produced working emvironment, on just a few watts --> over to a much more power demanding 3D dimensional working space. That's why some users suffer from coil whine for instance, when starting a game.It puts alot of strain to do this switch for the system and it's components. Almost similar as when testing an overclock on a system you haven't used before. It's a critical step for the system to go through.

Now I wouldn't recommend someone who never made an overcklock to doing this kind of things. That would only put users to the risk for even more problems I think, perhaps even issues that not yet known. I'm not using any OC on my own GPU with this game.

From my own experience, I can remember games that opened its launcher and the game window in a similar order on the screen. But often it switches back to normal as soon as I can get into the options in the game. What I normally do when it happens is that I have to turn the fullscreen option and toggle it on and off until the fullscreen returns. Happens quite often in many games when using Alt+Tab, it breakes easily the fullscreen mode.

Here when it comes to the options and when it comes to toggle different settings in the game. You actually don't necessary have to change these settings only inside the game if having problems. Remember the file settings.json earlier that could be opened ?

It's a different approach in changing the game the way you want by using the configuration file instead of doing it in the game, quite usefull when the window and the resolution doesn't work. It makes basically the same thing. Don't forget to save, so the new settings stays in the file.
The changes that was made in the file takes action next time the game is started.

Take also note what's your max resolution is for your screen, then you know where to start.
Users who building their own computers they often knows these details but for those who trying to run a game at something else it's not always an easy thing to know.

I'm always following one simple rule myself when setting up a game.
That is to never allow the game to run in a higher resolution than what the max resolution is for my screen. I'm sure it would mean lots of issues to expect if I try.

Now I'm not so familiar with new technical stuff like dynamic super resolution DSR.
I don't streaming anything of my games to other smaller devices or trying to having an higher resolution on my screen in getting visual improvements more than games are able to provide. I guess that's what dsr is about and mostly based upon in daily speach. Suppose I'm using a negative kind of dsr in the opposit direction than what users and developers usually talking of when playing in a smaller resolution than the screen has.

When it comes to both Steam itself and how the game opens the window, I haven't seen any problems so far with any of it myself. Actually a bit surprised I'm still able to run Steam on my own setup without reinstalls, I think I'm on my third year and it just updates itself perfectly.
Never seen a software that's been developed with the same level of compassion and knowledge before. Have only good things to say about Steam.

By that I'm having hard to believe the problem would be caused by Steam, nor the game itself if using an fresh new updated copy out of the box from Steam.. But rather the driver for the graphics, check if there isn't a newer version that may help things up.

I heard of using launch options for this game as well. I've tested it too but it made most of things more for the worse, specially when it comes to tearing and stutter.
If having the switches activated in shortcuts for the game or inside the games settings in Steam. Remember this "/borderless /windowed" may also force the window to act in a way that's maybe not what you want. Specially if starting to use the game settings in game and forgetting it. I didn't had to using it myself.

Good luck!

I figured an easy way around. Set up the full screen and your choice of resolution. Then restart the game.

You're a bit late, but oh well. :p

The problem somehow fixed itself a while ago, but I'll keep it in mind if it ever happens again.

i have pc asus b360 m ddr4, processor i5, 9500, 32 gb corsair vengeance 8x4, 3200mhz and gtx 1660 super 6gb, gdr6, and still I play JC3 very badly, the resolution changes by itself to 1900x700 and the graphics are bad, at the slightly larger distance is not visible.. the game is original, not pirated
electro75 Mar 25, 2024 @ 2:53am
I say that what I have far exceeds the recommended specifications and still it looks pretty bad and the resolution from the big one I give it is only visible in the small one

It happens to me very often when i alt tab to desktop to look for some youtube guide while playing, and Alt+Enter as suggested above is the only solution for me, it works, altough it's quite annoying to always do this, in most of the other games this is not needed. :areyouserious:
