Problem with priests and the map
Hi there,

I started playing JC3 last week. So far I completely liberated the first region and finished the missions there, I didn't really touch the second region yet. My statistics show me that I unlocked 3 priests and I got the achievement for that as well, but I can only find 2 active churches on my map. I looked up an interactive online map to find out that there are only 4 churches in the first region, and according to my map I have 2 active and 2 locked.

In addition to that, the star marker is stuck on the map tab since very early in the game. But there is nothing marked as new anywhere to be found. Whenever I discovered something or unlocked challenges, I hovered over them to clear the star. Exiting and restarting the game doesn't fix this.

Are those two issues possibly related? Can an encounter unlock a priest in a different region despite available locked churches in the current one, so that maybe an undiscovered church is marked as new?

Another member of this forum recently reported the same star marker issue. I've never encountered it and I have done a number of complete play throughs and have dozens of intermediate save files that don't show that behavior. Have you checked all of the remote islands and bases such as Boom Island, La Galera, the oil platforms and DLC locales?

I have a different star marker issue and that regards the Rebel Drop tab. That tab always has a star marker beside it even though I have cleared every marker beside every individual item.

I also have an issue with the churches/priests. My stats report 14 priests unlocked yet there are only 13 churches illustrated on the map. There is a 14th church which looks like a huge basilica in Regno. However, there is no priest there and no church icon for it on the map.

I have not been to Boom Island or the oil platforms yet, but I liberated La Galera as part of completely liberating the Fonte region. I basically just stepped out of the Fonte region for the first time for the story mission that leads to Dracon and the first mission after that. I have unlocked the initial missions for the three main DLCs, but didn't do any of those so far.

Well, stuck markers sure are a bit annoying. But as long as there are no major glitches that prevent me from completing the game 100%, I won't complain too much.

There is one known glitch that can prevent 100% completion and it regards the town of Bellevia. If you start the takeover of the town's police station, but exit before completion, there is a small chance that your save game will become glitched. Once glitched, it will be impossible to complete the takeover and thus, impossible to achieve 100% completion.

The safest approach is to make a backup copy of your save game before starting a Bellevia takeover. Regardless of this specific glitch, I'd recommend making a save game backup after every 5 or so hours of gameplay. There are numerous tales of woe on this board from those that have lost all progress due to the save file becomming corrupted or deleted after a game crash.

Thanks for the heads up. That would surely suck if that happens without a backup, I will make a backup after each session from now on. In JC2, I managed to avoid all avoidable progression glitches and got 99.95%, but at least the last achievement there was for 75%.

One further suggestion, make a save game before starting any of the DLC. You then get to replay them without starting a new game.

The 99.95% max completion bug on JC2 still bums me out to this day. It remains such an easy fix for the developers, yet they refused to do it. It's an insult to their players to hold out 100% completion as an aspiration and then making it impossible to achieve. And no, I don't consider the 100% mod a fix.

On the other hand, you probably completed 369 of the available 368 locations. ;)

Yeah, I can totally understand how bugs like these get into a release version. Some last minute changes to fix one thing break another, and the game is too large to test to completion each time. But not fixing them when they have been known for a looong time is sad. It's not like those are obscure bugs that only happen on weird machines. Well, I still remember the eternally locked safe house symbol on the map of JC1.

I got rid of my stuck marker by deleting (had a backup of course) the file "map_new_items" from the save folder. The game recreated the file without the glitch. Now the map gets the star everytime I get new things on the map and clears it when I have seen them. There is no file name for the rebel drop list, so maybe that's in the same file. Might be worth a try if that fixes you marker issue as well.

I followed your suggestion but it did not clear the star next to the Rebel Drop tab. I did find another possible explanation for the star next to the Map tab not clearing. It turns out there is at least one town, and possibly more, where the star marker on the map is almost always invisible. It's buried under an adjacent marker and only becomes visible within a narrow zoom range on the map. To see it, you need to zoom out to near the maximum level. If the problem reoccurs for you, you might want to play around with zoom levels on the map to see if there truly is a new marker and not a glitch in the save file.

If the issue came from overlapping icons, they must be in the same category since I tried singling out stuff with the filter options. If it happens again, I make sure to look with a few zoom steps below maximum as well. By deleting the file, I effectively emtied out the set of items on the map I didn't hover over yet. Too bad that doesn't work for rebel drops.

The town in question was Vinialetta in Cap Est and the overlapping icon was for the Frigo Garage. The town icon and garage icon are in the same catagory so it is not possible to filter out just one - hence the problem.

I raise this as a potential alternative since I'm always nervous deleting files for which I am not fully confident in their function. I'm looking around the map to see if there may be other map icons with the same issue.

Well, deleting or modifying files is my last resort as well. After I made a backup, I deleted the file in question and started the game up to check. I verified that everything else (unlocked priests, liberated locations, challenges, rebel drop list) was not affected, quit out to see if a new file was generated. I started up again to check if newly discovered locations would be properly marked as new, just to be sure that the new file works. All of those tests passed, otherwise I would have restored the backup.

I just restored my first backup (Cap Est not visited yet) with the glitch still there to check for any overlaps. I checked all of the filters in the 3 highest zoom steps, there was absolutely nothing to be found. All of the garages were apart from their town icons (even though a few were quite close). And in my current progress Cap Est didn't trigger that problem again, so I guess it was a real glitch and no overlap.

I think I may have misled you. The star marker is hidden when overlapped unless the zoom level is almost all the way out.

Here's a screen cap of Vinialetta as the blue town icon, zoomed in and the star marker is hidden behind the blue Friggo Garage icon.

The next screen cap is zoomed out almost to the minimum level and shows the star marker very faintly at the top right of the Capite West label.

Zoom in just one more level and it dissapears.

I'm not saying there isn't a glitch with the map star markers, particularly since I seem to be encountering one with the Rebel Drop markers. It's just that there is also a map layout issue that can produce similar results.

Well, even if I would have had a star that was covered by items in the same category on all zoom levels and therefore invisible, selecting everything (I did that multiple times as well) should have cleared it. Since garages, daredevil jumps and collectibles are not selectable themselves, they wouldn't get in the way here. So I'm 99.95% sure it was a game glitch, in my case at least.

Still having lots of fun (except for inevitable frustrating moments) though.

There is unofficial fix for Just Cause 2 though, worked for me.
