Well it is a unique game.. its a hybrid RTS lite with a open world element. Along side 3rd person combat.

Its a great gem but will have niche audience because whilst RTS games are quite popular on PC, console not so much and thats a shame because it isn't that bad of an RTS. Limited yes. Clunky ass driving mechanics aside... the star studded cast, the heavy metal theme. Considering how edgy games were becoming in the early 2010s.. the greyed out color palattes. Gears of War taking over shooters.

Something like this, breaking the mold and being its own thing. Having fun with itself.. you'd think it have gained a larger cult following.

It would need to go a similar route that Psychonauts did. It also might need to release without copyrighted music to be profitable, but maybe they can do a deal with Spotify or something to deliver a built-in app that way you can make your own playlist or go with curated one.

That's the reason EA wont publish it, the reason Double Fine hasn't tried to sell the idea to other Publishers is because Tim Schaffer doesn't really care enough about the title anymore to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Apparently almost no one actually liking the RTS elements was a big point of contention for him.

It's not that people are inherently opposed to the concept, it's just it was so badly implemented in the game that most players and reviewers at the time would have preferred it not existed at all.

If they had instead took a Pikmin or Overlord approach to the RTS stuff, it probably would have worked much better, I think.

But, it would have maybe been harder to make it all seem like a Rock Epic if that's what they did. Then again Dragon-Age: Origins had an Epic final battle and it didn't have any RTS elements to it, so who knows? Could have just been a lack of creativity on his part.

It was not badly implemented. It's actually pretty solid. The problem is the tutorial wasn't good enough (and also missing for the other 2 factions). There's a lot of things you just have to figure out on your own (but also, a lot of players are stupid and actually ignore important mechanics that the game has showed to them).

Also, Overlord, really? Overlord is garbage and far too simplistic. One of the worst game demos I've ever played.

I meant it purely as an example, Pikmin is the main game they should have attempted to emulate. I even get the feeling that was the plan at some point.

The problem with the RTS elements though is it doesn't give you nearly enough control, however one could argue this isn't really that big a deal as the RTS maps are very short.

As you mentioned it also doesn't really explain anything (I had already beaten the game for the second time when I realized you could upgrade your basic units.)

And there aren't any skirmishes you can do in game to fine-tune and really learn how to play it. Your only options are a handful of Story-quests required to progress the plot.

I wouldn't say it's "Pretty Solid" That just comes off as Cope. Just because you figured out how to deal with it, doesn't make it inherently good. It's just plain not.

But, it also feels like it takes away from the base game. It doesn't flow well. You go from an Open-World Hack and Slash Adventure Game (Some call it an RPG, I really don't think it is.) for... let's 70% of the game then it abruptly turns into a very awkward RTS. There's a isn't a logical flow between the stages. It's just an abrupt shift, Hell Eddie himself physically changes between them.

It's why I mentioned Pikmin, that is what this should have been. It would have flowed so much better.

Chances are that's how most people defaulted to when playing RTS quests anyways. I know that's what I did both times I beat it. You just don't have a ton of controls for the RTS side and what little you do have it's locked behind playing a solo.

The game's biggest fault is how disjointed it is. Everything feels like it was made in a vacuum with no cohesion.

Eddies Demon-form has no relevance in most of the game, the RTS side of the game has very little to do with the Adventure side of the game, The Side-Quests and Secondary Missions have virtually no bearing on anything. Outside the Races and Overslaughter they don't even reward you anything.
