You shouldn't need to, just try to connect the controller before you start the game. I think that's the only thing I did when I played it.

Hmm... well after searching around for solutions you could try:
1. "Disabling all other USB devices."
"Uninstall all of your USB hardware and physically remove the cables. Then plug in your game controller, install, and run the game. It should now recognize your controller."
or
2. "Disabling Steam overlay.

Then there was someone with a similar problem as yours.

"My original Microsoft Xbox 360 controller was not recognized by the game.
I asked support to the developer and their answer made it work perfectly.

1. Go to your start button and select RUN and in the box labelled OPEN type MSCONFIG and press the OK button. (Windows Key + R brings up the box)
2. Click on the tab that reads SERVICES
3. Check the box that reads "Hide all Microsoft Services"
4. Click on the button that reads "DISABLE ALL"
5. Now click on the tab that reads START UP.
6. Click on the button the reads "DISABLE ALL" and press the OK button. Windows will prompt you to restart the system.
7. Once windows restarts then you may get a message that the SELECTIVE STARTUP has been used.
8. Just close the message box. Now try the game.

If you wish to restore your background programs/services, you can select the "Enable All" option instead of the disable all option in the msconfig operation."

It says on the page of the game requires a controller... You said only keyboard showed up, so can you actually use a keyboard or do you have to use a controller like it says in the store? It says: 'Notice: Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons requires a controller to play'.

if you have 2 keyboards, 2 people can play together on one computer

I was having the same issue with my controller this morning, make sure you have the newer driver installed, for some reason mine was updated to the 2006 version...

Working fine now.

The problem is, why my controller work with any games on my Steam, but for Brothers, this one, the controller doesn't work. I tried tips to "Middle Sister" and it's the same, and i don't think my driver is the problem :(

I had the same problem, and this tutorial helped me (I use a generic USB controller not a 360 one): http://steamcommunity.com/app/225080/discussions/0/846963711056908201
If you use JoyToKey, make sure to uncheck "Configure diagonal input as separate buttons" in Options tab, so your moverment won't be limited when moving in diagonal directions.

I don't own a xbox controller. Instead, I use a ps3 controller with x360ce. All you need to do is to place the two files generated by x360ce into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons\Binaries\Win32. If this doesn't work, open the x360ce.ini file with notepad. Add a line 'HookCOM=1' under 'HookMode=1'. For those who are using a xbox xontroller, you might want to try connecting it in the big picture mode (not sure if it works or not). I hope this helps.
