Tomb Raider I
Change resolution for the window
How do I change the resolution so I can play in a 1280x1024 window?

I tried editing dosboxTR.conf ([sdl] section), but as soon as the 3dfx logo shows up, the resolution is set to 640x480.

(NVidia GTX 550 Ti (driver version 306.97), Win 8)

Your thread says to install glidos, which itself will cost 10 bucks. Why should I buy that, when all I want to do is run the game in a different resolution?
The regular steam version doesn't support higher resolutions. So either it's playing in your current res or paying for a better renderer. You could run in software mode instead of 3dfx. That does enable resolution switch with the function keys. But only up to 1024x768. And you ofcourse will not have the benefit of the Glide renderer.
you can edit file glide.ini in tomb raider (I) folder. If you want set resolution 1024x768 set Resolution=1.6
In dosboxTR.conf:
fullresolution=1280x1024
windowresolution=1280x1024
aspect=true (might not be needed)

You can set that to any resolution that you want (I run in 1920x1080). If aspect is set to true, it should play in a pillar box in a widescreen monitor.

Also, if you don't want glide and want to play it pixellated old school (like me), goto the TOMBRAID and rename tomb.exe to something else (like tomb.exe.3dfx) and rename tombno3dfx.exe to tomb.exe.
you can set setings in dosboxTR.conf and glide.ini and play with any resolution with glide
Whatever I choose in dosboxTR.conf gets ignored once the 3dfx logo appears. Then the resoluiton is reverted to 640x480.

The resolution scaler in glide.ini ... isn't that simply upscaling the 640x.. resolution?
Another option I would recommend instead of having to mess with dosboxTR.config is to go here and use this free program.

http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide

works great for tomb raider 1 and would assume its works just as well for other games in series.
It has resolution options an option for stretching or keeping a 4:3 aspect ratio which I prefer, and vsync option. Also note it centers the screen properly when in 4:3 unlike editing the dosboxTR.conf.

Just remember to delete glide2x.dll from the main tomb raider directory (back it up if u want to revert from using nglide) and if you struggle to find the nglide configurator after install look in either C:\Windows\SysWOW64 or C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\nGlide and create a shortcut.

I would recommend Xpadder for using a controller. Works perfectly for me.

I can also confirm that antialiasing can be forced through control panel if one so wishes. Put supersampling on as well thou if lara has white visible lines on her head.

Hmm, Im runninbg into problems with TR1 xpadder (360 controller). When assigning the left analogue stick to running it seem to have trouble with the full 360 circle of the controller. Behaving jerky and unresponsive sometimes, mostly with turning while running etc.. (sometimes jumping back instead of turning etc)...

I know I could probably use the D-pad on the controller to "fix this issue".. but I don't like the D-pad on a 360 controller (it's fine on a nes controller though :p)

Yea movement does seem overly sensitive at times for me on my 360 pad and lara sometimes starts doing here own thing. I tried increasing the deadzone (will need to push stick more before movement) in xpadder for the analogue stick and it had no effect in game. To get it to work I had to change joysticktype=auto to joysticktype=none in dosboxTr.config to prevent it overiding Xpadder.

If your pad is overly unresponsive you could try decreasing the deadzone to make it more sensitive.

Saying that thou tomb raider is so old Im not sure it had like 8 way analogue movement think it was more 4 way grid based and clunky. Old skool lol.

But yeah for anyone using Xpadder or whatever I would suggest turning off joystick in the dosboxTR.config to prevent conflicts.

Im just sticking to the trusty alt-ctrl-space method, for a game like Tomb Raider you need to have some accurate control over the character :)
if anyone knows why, when im in 1920x1080, the game itself only takes up 4:3 of the screen and stays to the right. Anyone know what I need to do to fix?
Winchester: That's a problem with the glide wrapper Steam supplies. Try the nGlide wrapper recommended by Whiplash a few posts earlier. That happily runs in 1080p, 4:3 centered w/ vsync. It comes with a simple configuration app.
thnx for the reply, Ill try it out
THNX SO MUCH its working 16:9 now!
