Simple Directions for using a PS2 Dual Shock Controller
Revised - The following link has been provided by "Calmly Fenetic" and does a great job explaining how to set up the PS2 Controller on Tomb Raider 1 for PC. Frankly, his page does a much better job in explaining it all. I'll leave mine up in case it can be any help to anyone. http://steamcommunity.com/app/224960/discussions/0/2765630416830834952/

Below is my original Post...

This game goes not allow you to easily configure a controller within the in-game settings. Supposedly, it can be done through DOSbox, but I've found that to be a little confusing. I use a simple PS2 Controller that plugs in through USB. By default, this game will recognize a few basic actions like running, but the buttons don't work well. My desire was to configure the game to play like it did on the original playstation. Below, I have explained the simplest, most effective way to do that.

1. First, you will want to download a small program called JoyToKey from the link below.
http://joytokey.net/en/download

2. You will want to extract and open this program. On the left hand side, you can create different profiles. I renamed the first one as "Tomb Raider 1." After connecting your PS2 controller and letting Windows automatically install drivers, you can press a button. As you press each button, JoytoKey should respond by highlighthing the controller # and button in green. For some reason, my controller is detected as "Joystick 2." This is no problem. I searched online for the PS1 button configuration and tried to reproduce it. The following configuration is a revised version of the PS1 controls with Jump/Shoot swapped and the R1/R2 and L1/L2 buttons swapped.

POV up = up (on your gamepad)
POV right = right
POV down = down
POV left= left
Button 1 (Triangle) = Space bar
Button 2 (Circle) = End
Button 3 (X) = Alt
Button 4 (Square) = Control
Button 5 (L1) = Delete
Button 6 (R1) = PageDown
Button 7 (L2) = Shift
Button 8 (R2) = Numpad 0
Button 10 (Start) = Escape

***Keep in mind that on your controller, the buttons may not match up to the same numbered buttons as mine did. For example, on my controller, the Triangle button registered as button 1. Just in case yours is different, I wrote both the numbered button assigned by JoytoKey and the actual button on the PS2 Controller.

3. Once you get your buttons assigned, all you need to do is keep the joytokey program open, then load up your game. The controller should work fine.

Your suggested controls seem different to the default PS1 controls I have seen. (Aren't PS2 buttons arranged the same way as PS1?) And I hope you didn't spend too much time working out how to use JoyToKey, as there is a guide that should help with this and the next five games in the series:

You are right. I think that when I was setting up my controller, I made minor adjustments and forgot. I revised my post above to include your link because you did a much better job explaining it. I also stated that my controller set up was a revised version of the PS1 Controls. Thanks for sharing that link and great job on it.

Joypad mappers are pretty common knowledge these days. Not sure an explanation is really needed tbh.

PS2 controller+USB adapter = standard DirectInput controller. Same as any other DirectInput controller.
