Tomb Raider I

Tomb Raider I

(Guide) How to edit keyboard controls for tomb raider 1
1: open local files folder from steam
-library
-right click tomb raider
- properties
-local files
-browse local files
2: open dosbox
3: select main and go to mapper
4: edit controls to how you would like them and save

Eg
press up arrow icon
select delete
select add
press W key
(you dont have to delete, however not doing so will make both up key and W the move forward control)

This link will tell you the unedited controls
http://tombraiders.net/stella/walks/controls/TR1controls.html

This is best done when the game itself is closed

unrelated note:
to save the game press the menu/inventory key
press down key
scroll to pasport icon, here you can save and exit.

Maybe I'm just not getting it, but could you please elaborate on how to add an event to a new key? How do I assign Draw/Holster Weapon [Space bar action] to a different key? Thank you!

1 click on the space icon (it should turn green and 3 icons will appear near the bottom left box- under the "tog dynam" icon

2 click "delete" icon (space will now do nothing)

3 click the "add" icon ( text at the bottom will turn red)

4 press the key that you would like to become the "draw weapon/ holster" command eg Enter (text at bottom will go back to normal)

note: if you just add a new command to the space icon than both space and the new key will draw/holster

hope this helps.

I'm having an issue where when I launch the game, it ignores my key mappings and just stick with the default ones. How do I fix that?

@ModernYasha there is two other ways to do this as I have an Xbox 1 controller.
Go into big picture mode.
Make sure your controller is connected in controller setting.
If it is, then carry on to next step. If not, then connect it.
In big picture mode go to your game (Tomb Raider 1) and go to manage game and then controller configuration tab.
This should bring up a picture of your controller and now you can map it, but at the bottom on the screen is... browse configs (one of three options at the bottom of the screen)
Click browse configs and you can select a pre-configured controller set up.
This worked for me, and should also work for you ;-)

If you just want to change the controls for a keyboard. Then ignore above...and...
In Tomb Raider 1 go into the control settings, and then press right.
You will now have "user key" options to configure.

Thank you! I recently bought a new laptop that doesn't have a numpad so I couldn't "look" in game which is a major disadvantage. Now I can! Thank you again! :)

Can I map the joystick directly with that? Doesn't seem to work.

Use JoyToKey, it allows you to map keyboard keys to gamepad.
No. I prefer controller companion but that doesn't answer my question.

The instructions in this topic are from 2017, for the vanilla DOSBOX version. Which you should absolutely NOT be playing in 2024.

To play the game properly, install the game from steam then simply install this fan patch:
https://github.com/LostArtefacts/TR1X

It includes support for modern controllers, removes the need for DOSBOX, as well as many, many other fixes and features.
