Switching to the hardest difficulty had taken this game to a good platforming mechanically speaking,and the feeling of getting "in the zone".

But a new problem appeared now : There is too much discrepancy between the two phases of gameplay; the platforming descent and the boss fighting.
The platforming descent is fun, but very long, and too long when you have to do it again and again to fight the bosses and learn their patterns. It takes really too long to get to the last boss just to get shot in ten seconds and then you just have to repeat the whole thing again.
It's a pity as both gameplays would stand well on their own. But not together.
The main platforming game would have worked as a self contained arcade game. Very similar to those simpler titles of the Atari VCS era like Berzerk that you can keep playing for hours, and where the repetitivity becomes a good thing.

There are other little mistakes such as the grind to unlock gear that doesn't fit with that good repetitivity.

As usual with Adult Swim the production quality is perfect and very in tune with old school coin op arcade games. The music is reminiscent of Strider sometimes (which means it's great).

if you are a speedrunner this game could be a must have but as for me I didn't want to keep playing it

I reinstalled the game after a few years of not playing it, annnnnd it does NOT hold up well. I figured I'd be ready for this game after beating Skul, but apparently not.

A bunch of enemies in here are "Aha, did your eyes miss both my warning pixels? Yes? Free damage!" and that's about 90% of how you'll get hurt.

It wouldn't be as bad if graphics seemed to line up with actual game more? I feel like I keep hitting enemies with my sword or drop attack, and instead I get hurt. For what reason?!

It was good in its day, but just move on to something new at this point. I was gonna try to achievement farm this game but honestly, I don't think it'll end up being worth it. Not a cult classic or anything.

TLDR: Audiovisually disappointing. Faux-NES presentation. Good mechanically but extremely generic. Not worth spending time into.

There are almost direct upgrade/alternatives to this so I am removing permanently.

I found this to be a monumental disappointment based on the reviews. There's just something...bland about it. Maybe you need to be a speedrunner or somebody who REALLY likes platformers. It's also needlessly punishing, and the best weapon for trying for achievements happens to be one of the ones with the most annoying hitbox.
Just wasn't for me.

Definitely a nice looking game with a great premise, fun gameplay, good sound effects and wonderful music ... but sadly flawed with slowdowns introduced by an update years ago that probably won't get fixed no more. Sad but true ...

Not really my thing.

I guess standards were lower in 2013. Bought it for $1.39 and STILL refunded it. I cannot begin to understand why this game has 1400+ positive reviews and...57 negative reviews? Am I missing something? Is everyone on some really fun drugs I don't know about? I dislike the appearance, the controls, the combat, the overall game design...basically everything that matters. I guess the music was okay? I don't remember, but I didn't actively hate it so it must have been okay. Super cheap game, but I'd rather have the small amount of money than this game in my library.
