Hammer vs Hammer++
Hello to everyone!
That's my first ever discussion in Steam, so do not throw tomatoes on me))
I'm a software engineer and I do love work in UE and Godot. Also, I love No more room in hell and decided to try build a map. Could you help me with choosing between Hammer and Hammer++. I have no idea about advantages and disadvantages in each. Thanks in advance.
P.S Is there any tricks to import my own models into the project?:steamhappy:

Hammer++ is basically Hammer but with more extra cool features and qol updates. There's literally no reason to go for the standard "uncool" version when you can use a super improved better version at your grasp.

I wish Hammer++ was around when i started mapping, it would've saved me a lot of headaches and night terrors.

Maybe when it was first / initally released, but atm it's pretty stable and crashes less than standard hammer. Ficool, the creator of Hammer++ is actively minimizing the crashes as can be seen on github. Please do not spread fake news, it's extremely deceptiveful and deceitful

for me all my new materials make polygons flash black. Alpha painting always shows 1.0 value. And some other issues. Hammer has them too, but there are more bugs in hammer ++/

The key here is "for me". Flashing textures suggest bad installation aka skill issue
Importing your own models would be best solved by looking into Blender Import/Export as SMD files Addon, and Crowbar to help compile them. There's also many pages on the Valve Development Community and online about models, materials and more.

I'm sure there's other people better to explain or help if needed, but simple props should be pretty doable if you already have some experience.
Hammer++ gives you more accurate lighting renders, the ability to render more shaders on geometry (cubemaps, bumpmap, etc), better stability, physics simulation, easier UI navigation, among many other differences. Those list the important changes, but there are far more improvements. Hammer++ is not compatible with every Source game unfortunately, which is where the main issue comes in. People have managed to make some miracles happen, such as making the L4D2 branch work with L4D1, but generally there's not much support for less popular games. The main advantage Hammer has over Hammer++ is consistency. It works for every Source game.

Models are a completely different story, and will depend heavily on which game you're trying to port models into. General advice applies to all games though, use the original skeleton when possible, bone names should match the original model, etc.

That happens when you install h++ in SDK. Put it in common\nmrih\bin\ instead
