Because that guide is outdated and incomplete, it only serves as an introductory guide. My guide will feature extensive detail on combat, stamina, movement and more. Not only the base mechanics, but also advanced tricks and techniques that you learn as you go. It's intended for both new players and veterans.
There are several important mistakes that have not been corrected. Some of them are recent changes, others are not. Examples of these are:
- Claiming that zombies that are on fire deal double damage
- No mention of the Gene Therapy syringe
- Claiming that survival maps go from 25 zombies on wave 1 to 210 zombies on wave 2
- No mention of Nightmare difficulty, no info or strategy
- Claiming that bites have a higher chance of infection when in actuality they are the only way zombies can infect you. Normal hand attacks don't have any chance of infecting you.
On the other hand, you have a gunslinger power for pistols. When aiming, do not move and wait a few seconds for your vision to turn yellow. This means that the bullet you fire will deal a lot more damage. Try not to use it too much, however, as it gives the infected time to gain ground on you if they are not being fought by melee fighters.
Infection has a chance to set in when you are bitten. Keep your health high, because the chance of the bite infecting you heavily depends on your current health. Once you're infected, friendly fire will turn on for you (if it isn't on already) and players can damage you with their weapons. If you die without being headshot your corpse will come back as a sprinting zombie. To avoid this, you can press K (default) with a firearm in your hand and left-click to suicide, given you have a bullet in the chamber. Infection progression is tracked by your vision. It begins as an outline to your vision, but as it worsens your vision worsens, with motion blur and losing sight altogether. Pills will ward it off temporarily, while Gene Therapy cures it for as long as you live (but has a chance to blind you temporarily.)'
The server's map name matters for the game mode. nms_XXXX means the map is in Survival mode, where you have to defend a location for (typically) 10 waves and then get rescued. nmo_XXXX means the map is in Objective. These levels make you traverse throughout the map (with random differences, like the path you have to take or the objective you have to do) and reach the end, getting rescued there.
Molotovs have a chance to make the zombies it sets on fire begin sprinting. These zombies usually can die with one light (with most weapons) by the time they reach you.
Heavy attacks can be charged for 5 seconds, which does devastating amounts of damage and can reliably kill most shamblers.
Child zombies can be missed in the heat of the battle and are really fast, but do much less damage than normal zombies. They usually die in 1 hit, but weaker melee weapons may require 2.
National guard zombies can be shamblers or runners and have body armor, meaning they take more work to kill.
You can contract the infection by sewer water too. Like on that map where you start on a roof.... damn tis been a while since i last played NMRiH now that i think of it...
Yes, though I was only referring to ways to get infected via zombie damage, not environmental damage.
If there's duplicate guns you can unload the ammo from one (default press U) and then pick up the other. Don't forget to reload.
If you hold G (default) then release you can toss whatever you were holding.
Be careful ascending or descending ladders, like all Source games you gotta be right on it and mostly facing it so you can glide like a magnet... otherwise splat
You can move in any direction without runners or zombie children catching up to you, except backwards.
If you hold G you'll throw the item with some force depending which one it is. If you just want to get it out of your inventory you can simply press G or go in your inventory and right click on the item.
