The Bayonet in NMRiH, is actually & basically the perfect example of the frontier between "fun" and "good" stuff. Indeed, it's fun to see & hear the undead heads exploding with that Bayonet when we don't whiff or miss. It's fun when we can just chill and just wave around in pure Tourist Mode and on easy (tutorial) NMO maps such as Broadway, Chinatown, Cabin, Toxteh, Lakeside, etc.
But in NMS, except of course for the very early waves on some maps, it's another story.
Same for solid NMO runs. I mean just try to complete (for instance) Underground (original or final official version), Anxiety (original or final official version) Broadway 2, Rockpit (original or final official version), Subside V5 (Workshop), or the recent & brilliant Small Town (Workshiop) with that Bayonet only. Best of Luck.
Impossible because even if it's "fun", it's actually bad.
• Really awful start-up with terrible delay feeling
• The notion of (let's call it) "perfect centre" to one-shot is foolishly dangerous
• Replacing the Shove Back ability
• Which means no Shove Back at all with that Bayonet version
• Which means no Cancel ability either
• No arc, and only a spot in front of the character
• Which means a sad one-dimensional and extremely small & limited space control
But, yeah, it' can be pretty "fun".
Please tell me you're kidding.
The worst is if you have 2-3 runners together, you bayonet one and get grab by the other. Should save bullets for these problems.
(sledgehammer is excellent instant kill cleave. swipe 2-3 zombies together in 1 strike without charging!)
That would make it more satisfying to use - the ability to one-tap zombies either with the bullet or the bayonet, at the cost of shove and a more wide-swinging melee option.
As it is, the clunkiness of the bayonet combined with its frequent need for 2 or 3 hits to kill makes me avoid it whenever possible. I usually opt for the bayonet-less version if I can find it.
And yes, sledge is the real deal for melee enjoyers. Pickaxe too. No need to charge it at all on Classic mode, just swing and pop those heads.
