you're mostly gonna be using melee since ammo and guns are scarce, press V to shove. you should ALWAYS shove after every melee attack, otherwise you will likely be bitten or hit. holding down left mouse button does a charged melee attack. BUT if you hold down left mouse button for the heavy attack for ~1 second before hitting a zombie, you will lose 0 stamina. this is best done with the sledgehammer or pickaxe against walking zombies, since both of those weapons 1 hit walkers. you should still shove after every attack in case you miss.
the machete is the best melee weapon in the game for dealing with runners, it deals the lowest stamina and one taps them. the machete swipe attack can also kill multiple zombies at once. also an important thing to note is that your stamina regenerates faster when crouching. this is all good information you should know off the top of my head before diving in but nothing helps more than just playing the game
as for realism mods, i like the realistic gunshots mod. its 10x better than the gunshots in vanilla which sound like little farts
Have some sound replacement mods already picked out. Anything to bring the graphics a little more up to speed?
Also, does the shove only affect the one zombie directly in front of you? Or is it sort of a splash effect ala Left 4 Dead?
For little custom tweaks like crouch toggle or compass always on screen, or how to know what ammo is what caliber (the boxes themselves, know the guns pretty well) do you have tips for where I should look for that sort of info?
Thanks for your responses and after reading the basic guide I see what y'all are saying and how it adds up. Have not encountered the sledgehammer or pickaxe yet but I'll keep them and pistols in mind.

A lot of the comments in this thread are giving some misinformation as people often do in this community for some reason
in this game
you will die
alot
you should start off with Broadway
not Broadway 2 because it's way harder
and this post from the NMRIH sub reddit explains how hard
https://www.reddit.com/r/nmrih/comments/otsplm/got_to_be_one_of_the_hardest_maps_there_is/
anyways,
do not charge in groups of zombies
do not waste ammo
do not go for body shots as zombies (or ghouls if you're a fan of Romero's NOTD)
do not stay in one place
do not hoard every item (if a friend has a gun that needs the ammo you picked up, give it to him/her)
always go for headshots no matter what
always press v every time a zombie gets too close in your bubble
always charge your attack
always check how much ammo you have if you're unsure
when you're infected and you're close to becoming a bacon eater press K if you have a loaded gun in order not to bite your friends
always save up stamina
also the reason Broadway is a good map for beginners
+guaranteed machete spawn
+enough 9mm and 12 gauge
+a sniper rifle on the roof to clear out kids and runners
+guaranteed flashlight spawns
+a good mix of CQC and open areas
and also
don't drink Phil Collins.
Perhaps even dumber question... I've made it to the truck/tank on a couple of different maps, and yet it still said "Survivors have been overrun"... what does that mean if I made it to the escape/how do you actually "win"?
It's up to you how you wanna interpret that.
Also, map change has nothing to do with "victory"
