Iron Skin is not working. I spent the 1000 VE points but my defense does not go up? Is it a visual bug or its simply does not work?

Just finished, and loved this game :) Not sure how much I missed - I'll replay it in the not too distant future :) I chose Quarry, Mar Gruk, Sapphire and Trine as my final party; found excalibur; defeated the massive plant thing and the dragon of perdition....
