3DMark
3DMark Won't Launch
Hello, there!

I am not a regular on these forums, so please bare with me. On June 4, 2018, I decided to buy 3DMark - because I had always wanted to be able to tag along with others in benchmarking. I went on and installed the software to my laptop, only to find that it wouldn't get past the 3DMark loading screen.

Laptop Specs (HP ProBook 6475b):
- CPU :: AMD A10-5750M
- GPU :: AMD Radeon HD 8650G (APU graphics)
- RAM :: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 SO-DIMM
- STR :: 2TB 5400rpm SATA 2 HDD
- OS :: Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) v1803

NOTE :: I had (and still have) the latest OS updates and AMD drivers for the GPU.

After a few hours of attempting to troubleshoot the game (reinstalling the game, reinstalling SystemInfo, etc.), I went on and made a last-ditch effort to see if the game simply needed more time to finish setting itself up. I allowed it to 'load' for ~5 hours straight, to no avail. After this attempt, summer college courses had started, so I had no time to touch the thing.

Late last night, I decided, yet again, to see if i could get the software to work on a different computer - the 'new' workstation.

Workstation Specs (Dell Precision T7500):
- CPU :: 2x Intel Xeon X5680's
- GPU :: nVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
- RAM :: 48GB (12x4GB) DDR3 ECC REG DIMM
- STR :: 2TB 7200rpm SATA II HDD
- OS :: Windows 10 Enterprise (64-bit) v1803

NOTE :: I have the latest OS updates and GPU drivers for this machine as well.

Once the installation had completed, I went on and fired up 3DMark again - only to encounter the same issue again. On both computers, I had Java installed and updated to the latest version, and had no overclock or undervolt applied. Earlier today, I attempted to get a refund, but was unable to (due to the 2-hour 'play-time' limit that I had exceeded while waiting for the software to load). At this point, I am also unable to give the steam key away, leaving me with a wasted 39 USD (DLC included) and no way to use 3DMark.

I'm planning on getting either a GTX 1060 6GB or GTX 1070 in a week, but I'm not of the opinion that switching from a Dx11-capable GPU to a Dx12-capable GPU will alleviate the issue I am having. I haven't been able to successfully open the game at all - which is a bit disappointing.

Before you ask, I have tested the suggestions from the following threads already:
- https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

Tried both the demo and the paid version(s), in both 32-bit and 64-bit modes as well, just to be thorough. For anyone wondering, both of my machines are clean installed at this point. The T7500 started from a formatted HDD, and the laptop (ProBook) was reset recently (kept nothing) before testing 3DMark again. I had tested 3DMark before my laptop needed the reset, and ran into the same issue. My settings are set for DEP on Windows Services only. Even running Steam (and 3DMark) as Admin did nothing. I'll be checking Windows Event Viewer in a few.

I have no other options other than to either come here for help, or take the cash loss. Please help...

So am I understanding this right, the UI does not even open?

If so, can you do the following steps:

Add a launch option "--trace" to 3DMark on Steam and start it in Force 64bit mode

Then email the 3dmark.log and 3dmark-native.log from Documents/3DMark/ to info@futuremark.com so I can take a look.

If the logs or the folder do not exist, they suggest a write permission problem (seems unlikely if you have tried already with Steam started as admin)

I have added the "--trace" launch option and am using the (force 64bit) menu option. While the logs you have requested were not made, the file 'sii.log' is new. I haven't been able to get any logged output until now, so I guess it's an improvement? I'll send what I can.

I have the same problem. I have noticed that the process "javaw.exe *32" produces a small CPU load and its memory usage is very slowly increasing over time.

Most likely cause is file permission issue - inability to write to Documents/3DMark or to ProgramData\UL\3DMark\ folders. But you would need to send me the logs to verify this. See above for instructions.

Looks like you were right, I gave full permissions for the ProgramData\UL\3DMark folder for my account and now it works again! Thank you!
In my case, the issue was caused by there being special characters in the path. In addition to this, permissions were also wrong. Be sure to check those first...
