Y's Origin and Y's: The Oath In Felghana are the best of the 3.
Chronological Order of the Games:
Y's Origin (available on steam)
Y's I+II (available on steam)
Y's: The Oath In Felghana (available on steam)
Ys: Memories of Celceta (not available on steam)
Ys V: Ushinawareta Suna no Miyako Kefin (not available on steam)
Ys: The Ark of Napishtim (not available on steam)
Ys Seven (not available on steam)
Y's: Origin is the first game time line wise. Y's I + II contains Y's I which officially was the first "Released" Ys game but Origin is the Prequel to Ys I. So get Y's Origin if you want the first game in the story timeline.
Nps I am a fan of the series so post about it so others can enjoy it.
Also, I know for a fact that Ys IV: Mask of the Sun (the SNES Ys IV) actually took place chronologically before Ys III, and Ys IV: Dawn of Ys (the TG16 Ys IV) wasn't considered canon. The PS Vita Ys IV, Memories of Celceta, is supposed to replace Mask of the Sun as the official Ys IV. I'm not certain if it still fits into the timeline the same way as Mask of the Sun, or if they altered it to fit in after Oath in Felghana.
And then there's Ys Strategy, but pretty much everyone tries to forget that ever happened.
There's also a few JP remaked games for PS2, but i'll not count them (more info, here [isu.wikia.com] )
Glad i have a vita and a psp
what about YS V ? Does it make a huge gap in the inter-woven plot of I don't play it? Same question for Memories of Celceta too, since I do not own a Vita.
However, the fact that Falcom had to state what the chronological order is in the first place is a bit of an indication of the isolated nature of the stories of each game. You won't miss anything by not playing Ys V or Celceta before anything else.
To the best of my knowledge, Ys V falls chronologically between Felghana and Ys VIII.
