Ys I

horrible combat system
i was expecting a combat system similar to secret of mana or zelda. just like origins and oath.
but this run around - but not into - the enemy style combat is kinda annoying :/

edit:
well, its actually okay once you get some equipment, as long as you dont play on hard right away. kinda relaxing to eat pretzels while grinding levels with one hand :D

I think that you didn't even read the instructions for the Bump System. As Holy says, run into them off-center, from the sides or from the back.
Even then it's not always a safe shot. Also, the less damage you take yourself, the less damage takes the enemy, so these sideways attacks would take forever to kill a simple bear. O_o The prob is also that there's no visual cue of enemy attacks. Monsters aren't really attacking, they simply wander around. You have to attack first, and it's like a dice roll: you may hit or miss, even if attacking monsters from the back (and they will always succeed if catch you unguarded). =(

Gotta try Ys 2, hope it's better.

Not too sure what the issue is, seeing as I never had any problem with inflicting damage from off center as it's meant to be. In any case, you can move diagonally in Ys 2, which expands how you can approach enemies and hit them. Also, Ys 2 has magic, so there's an alternative to melee combat most of the time.

He probably played Ys for 5 mins and tried to kill first two enemies or he is very bad player. I don't have any issues with combat system because it's pretty easy.

Yes, the combat is stupid. When you hit a monster, you actually hit yourself (usually for more damage than the monster). But you can heal when standing still (on Normal). So you just hit, run away, hit... And so forever. And after 5-10 minutes of such hits-and-runs - what? Two experience points and two coins?! And I have a quest to purchase the shield, which costs 700 coins... Damnit, I'd play this forever just getting that damn shield... Tried just exploring, but it appears that there's no 600 coins lying around anywhere. So I'm pretty mad at this combat system and steep learning curve and that I've tired of guessing what to do next. :/
The combat isn't stupid, but I think you can't read well while playing... xD

I really like the combat system, but Ys II is a better game.

Guys.
Keep in mind that this is a faithful facelift of a 1987 game.
Game mechanics, bosses, enemy and item counts etc. were designed against the hardware limits and available coding techniques at the time.

The bump system just takes getting used to.
tovie Jul 16, 2013 @ 9:22am
its not about getting used to or being good at it,its about bumping into the enemy not being a very intresting way of doin combat.

the way the combat is here it seems better suited for a bumpercar game or smthn(srsly it would work well for a bumpercargame, its just superboring for an rpg)

i havent played far cause once i had a minute with the combat system my fun was over.but what struck me most is:how can there be any depth in this combar system?if i keep playing how will the combat improve?cause atm im just bumping into enemys slightly ofcenter and then i push em against a wall and they die after a while...will the combat become more intresting or will i find myself in 2 hours bumping into bigger enemys and bumping them into walls?

i don't mind the combat system, does kinda make enemies either super easy or super hard but the bosses are well designed so they aren't too easy and it makes for a more fast paced game. i hate going through mazes in final fantasy games or other games with random encounters but with this they were fine.

I'll agree on it being a bit of dice roll. No matter what angle I attack from, off-center or not, most of the time they seem to turn and hit me anyway. It was fine once I got some armor and I'd just stop every so often in the field to heal, but you don't regen in dungeons and the enemies hit much harder in them. A bit annoying, but not unplayabe. I grew up playing these older games in the 90's, but never a game with this type of combat system so it is a little strange to me.

That's not really true. There's a ring that allows you to regen health while in dungeons. You should find it first though.

There is also the spirit cape in Ys II but it sucks up MP really fast (and you cannot equip the 1/2 MP ring with it ;( )

On the subject, I was a bit doubtful of the bumping system at first but after 2 mins, you're used to it and it's actually fun to play. It's not actually brainless "bumping", even less with the boss battle. But it's true, I like Ys 2 system better :) Bump + magic = win, mega fast paced gameplay and epic bosses

They could be a lot worse. With this combat system, you have to think a bit about how to approach the enemy and rely on your own reflexes and skill. It could have been just like Hydlide where combat was based almost entirely on luck.

The spirit cape does not consume MP, only the magics do. The Spirit Cape is literally just the Heal Ring by another name. The only thing that eats your magic super fast is the Shield magic, which you only have for the final boss.

the game comes from back in the day when controllers had 2 buttons. One was used for the menu and the other toggled your rings. They did what they had to to make an "Action RPG"...and they succeeded as they are credited as the company that created the genre. Game was a blast back in the day, where in their first ARPG game "Dragon Slayer" you took 1 step, enemies took 1 step, you pressed "action" and you attacked anyone next to you or picked up items on the ground...in Ys you barreled around the area at (then) breakneck speed, and just slammed into enemies. Blew lots of kids minds.
