There are two different options to select Chronicles versus Complete mode. One is in-game which only changes character artwork.
The other is in the configuration program (right-click Ys I and select "Run Configuration" then select "Chronicles 30:17" or "Complete 4:3" from the Display Mode option near the bottom) - That option is what will keep the original aspect ratio with the borders around the edge (Complete) or crop the image and refit it to a wide aspect ratio (Chronicles).
Have you already tried toggling that option? Don't leave it on Automatic, which will keep it in Complete mode.
Alright, so you selected Chronicles mode and it started in Complete mode. If you run the configuration program now, what display mode is currently selected? Is it set at Automatic, or Chornicles?
Alright, so we can say with some certainty that there's nothing wrong with your configuration file. What is your system config - specifically, what graphics card are you using and what is your default display resolution and refresh rate?
That's very similar to what I have, so this should be solvable somehow.
Did you install the game to the default diirectory? What version of Windows are you using?
1) Uninstall Ys I
2) Delete the following folders completely:
- C:\Users\[user name]\Saved Games\FALCOM\ys12c
- D:\SteamLibrary\Ys I (or wherever your Ys program folder is located)
3) Exit Steam, restart, and reinstall Ys
4) Run the Ys configuration program and set everything in the display settings to the following:
- Resolution: 1920x1080
- Refresh Rate: 60 Hz
- Display Mode: Chronicles
- Texture Filter: Trilinear
- Checked options: Full-Screen, 32-bit Textures, Maintain Aspect Ratio
From what I understand, that really should work, but if it doesn't then I'm out of ideas for now. I'll try to keep searching. Maybe someone else here can help, but otherwise you may need to try contacting XSEED directly for further support, or to try for a refund.
One other question though - Did you try running Ys II as well, and if so, does that game give you the same problem?
I've spent enough time fiddling with it that I really just want my refund now.
