Ys I
Sykaas Nov 26, 2014 @ 6:23pm
Game won't activate "Chronicles" mode. Always starts in "Complete" mode.
I start a new game and select "Chronicles" as my game style but the game keeps starting in the Complete mode with the border around the screen.

If anyone can please help me out, I'd be grateful.

I've already tried disabling steam cloud, editing the config file directly, running in compatibility mode and as an administrator, and nothing works.

The whole reason I bought this is because it's an updated version. If this doesn't work, I want a refund.

There are two different options to select Chronicles versus Complete mode. One is in-game which only changes character artwork.

The other is in the configuration program (right-click Ys I and select "Run Configuration" then select "Chronicles 30:17" or "Complete 4:3" from the Display Mode option near the bottom) - That option is what will keep the original aspect ratio with the borders around the edge (Complete) or crop the image and refit it to a wide aspect ratio (Chronicles).

Have you already tried toggling that option? Don't leave it on Automatic, which will keep it in Complete mode.

I tried that and nothing changed.

Alright, so you selected Chronicles mode and it started in Complete mode. If you run the configuration program now, what display mode is currently selected? Is it set at Automatic, or Chornicles?

It still shows Chronicles in the config program.

Alright, so we can say with some certainty that there's nothing wrong with your configuration file. What is your system config - specifically, what graphics card are you using and what is your default display resolution and refresh rate?

Nvidia GeForce 410M is my graphics card (drivers up to date), my desktop is at 1920x1080 at 60 fps.

That's very similar to what I have, so this should be solvable somehow.

Did you install the game to the default diirectory? What version of Windows are you using?

Game is in the same directory as the rest of my Steam games, at D:\SteamLibrary\etc. I have Windows 7 x64.

Ok, I've searched around but am fairly stumped at this point. Here's one last process to try.

1) Uninstall Ys I
2) Delete the following folders completely:
- C:\Users\[user name]\Saved Games\FALCOM\ys12c
- D:\SteamLibrary\Ys I (or wherever your Ys program folder is located)
3) Exit Steam, restart, and reinstall Ys
4) Run the Ys configuration program and set everything in the display settings to the following:
- Resolution: 1920x1080
- Refresh Rate: 60 Hz
- Display Mode: Chronicles
- Texture Filter: Trilinear
- Checked options: Full-Screen, 32-bit Textures, Maintain Aspect Ratio

From what I understand, that really should work, but if it doesn't then I'm out of ideas for now. I'll try to keep searching. Maybe someone else here can help, but otherwise you may need to try contacting XSEED directly for further support, or to try for a refund.

One other question though - Did you try running Ys II as well, and if so, does that game give you the same problem?

I emailed XSEED at the same time as I put this message up. I'll try your advice when I get the chance. Thanks for your help.

Just checking to see if you managed to have any luck with the game or XSEED support.

Still no luck, and still no response from XSEED.

I've spent enough time fiddling with it that I really just want my refund now.

I'm sorry to hear that. I understand XSEED support staff are probably mostly on holiday by now, but in any case if you can't get it working, I hope you get a refund.
