This has probably been mentioned a thousand times, but is it me or does hacking terminals seem almost pointless.. Too me it feels way too luck oriented, no sense of skill involed with it. Across fallout 3 GOTY and Fallout: New-vegas GOTY I've spent maybe.. 1500 Hours in the game, so I know the basics of hacking ( <> and () are often dud removers and replenish your tries, even though it's a shot in the dark which it'll do.. ) I also know logging out of the terminal gives you three more tries, but the only thing I have going for me is a theory that the code for the terminal has something to do with the function of the building either Pre-war or Post-war, which sometimes this is indeed the case, but that's right maybe.. 40% of the time, and it can be hard to know what the purpose of the building was/is. In short, it really feels like the entire concept of hacking in the fallout universe is really dated and extremely flawed. Why bother at all when you can just lock-pick the door (A skill that is more important than hacking because not every locked container can be hacked open and most of the terminal locked doors can be lock-picked) or sneak past the enemies leaving traps for them, or hell, sending your followers in if you have a support build in mind (Good on you for trying it, Chief. I do it all the time and it's a mixed bag based off difficulty. Rule of thumb, learn to run)

You are 100% correct. it is reaqlly pointless.
This is how I do it: I always choose the first three passwords and after three tried I close and open the computer again and try the first three passwords again. Math tells us that the chance for the correct passwords, that's under the first three, increases eversy time :) It's better than try-and-error in my opinion.

It's just really annoying in it's current state. There's most likely a mod floating around out there that fixes all the issues with it, but it's kind of sad bethesda hasn't caught wind of it's uselessness and done something about it. If I was in charge of fallout (In my dreams.....) I'd refind the hacking system and use it as a mini-game done only to electronic NPCS (Bots, Androids and sentries) and introduce destroying of locks. (TNT on a safe has a chance to open based off safe lock level, Demolitation skill level and your luck) Because as it stands, Science is a borderline useless talent that's used only for a system that's pointless.

I'd understand you, if my experience in the game told me Hacking requires skill of some sort, it doesn't. There are a few things to look out for, that increase the odds of you pulling the hack off, but the bulk of it is just luck. When you compare Hack versus Lock-pick and Sneak, Science is absolutely useless. When you compare Science to just lock-picking, it's (Surprise!) Still useless. They way they've handle the science skill is kind of sad, it's soo drastically under utilized that only newer players really bother with it. But, with Fallout 4 Possibly taking place in Boston and having MIT in it, hopefully they revamp it. Though i'd i'd prefer being able to ally with the enclave or becoming a Ghoul/Super-mutant but baby steps. lol

I will say this about the Science skill, The perk related to sneak deactivating robots is kind of cool, but with sneak attacks (later in game you can one shot most robots depending on Stealth level and weapon quality) It's pretty much useless. Turrets are only an issue until you get Pulse Nades/Weapons, than they're a minor obstacle, More of a road bump really. Here's an idea, why not have a science perk that allows you to build and place your own Turrets?. If they had something like that in game, it would make Science a more viable option, not as viable as repair or medicine, but close all the same.

What, would you rather have it be more realistic? Open up an OS console on the in-game computer, enter in some commands, learn some programming from a programming skill book to help with that? Actually someone needs to make a mod that does that now that I think of it lol.

Maybe it's just not your thing. I know I love doing it since I'm really into computers and programming. There is some skill to it too, since it relies on your science levels.

I agree, however it somewhat relies on being able to reset the password choices by exiting the terminal and starting again, if you were unable to circumvent that then it would be less about RNG and more about using your head

I would bother with doing that, if it wasn't an utter shot in the dark what it would do (Half the time instead of deleting duds, it gives me more tries even though I haven't used up any of my tries.. -_-) If it wasn't for lock-pick, Science would have a place in the game (Kind of..) But due to Lock-pick, only newer players who don't know better really bother with it.

Maybe it's just not your thing. I know I love doing it since I'm really into computers and programming. There is some skill to it too, since it relies on your science levels.

I don't really have an issue with it, it just feels like science is really useless in the current Fallout universe. Outside of hacking terminals, there just aren't any uses for it. (Again, 90% of the things that can be hacked open can be picked open at a much faster rate..) I'd like to see it being used more often, maybe giving you a perk that could allow you to place sentries down where ever you please? That would make it a viable skill, it would also make support builds seem like a viable option. I use to invest in science back when I first started playing fallout, but I quickly noticed how pointless it was. It's like a gimped repair/Lock-pick skill. Has alittle bit of both skills, but isn't even remotely as useful.

It seems you just saw the Head-line and didn't bother reading the actual post. I explained in it that i do in fact know about the dud removers and virtually every other trick behind hacking.

i agree with sometimes the terminal give false info, but as you also know , if you already missunderstand something its harder to correct it with right hacking word, and dont forget skill level again do matter , and that is what many forget here you cant hack a word with low skill level if code is above average chance for false information increase...and we all forget that then we think all info is showed is correct....

but that is true if you cant solve it on 3 tries ...get out of terminal... you are not cleaver enough ( need more science - # - 25 - 50 - 75 - 100 ) and luck dont count here
other skill like rep and medic is same very easy - easy - average - hard - very hard

but if you are tired of this mini games as i am use the mods to fix it ... this is my 3 run through the game .... lockpick ( show spot ) and hacking is ...1 word selection or more to increase the diffculty on it

If I were in charge of Fallout, I'd either get rid of hacking out-right or revamp it. I'd Revamp science skill as a whole, it's one of the very first things I do, because in it's current state it's a gimped version of Repair/Lock-pick with a touch of sneak. I'd also expand upon speech (Most likely fuse it and barter together) Maybe introduce a perk that would allow you to work with some of the NPC factions that aren't listed (Fiends,Jackals, Scorpions, Vipers) Giving you access to new side-quest,gear and companions as well impacting the main-story. As well as bribe off (And "Hire") Some other factions. (With a hire barter skill, you'd be able to not only talk your way out of getting jumped by a band of super-mutants but also hire them to help you explore a near-by area.) If Interplay were still in charge of Fallout, I think a lot of the stuff I've listed would of been in the game in some shape or form.

Before level 30, if there is a lockpick and terminal for a door, I do both for the EXP. After level 30, I ignore the terminal.
