Where's the first place you go after leaving vault 101?
I pretty much always plunder springvale and the school since they are right there before heading to megaton. Do you head anywhere specific to maybe grab certain items right off the bat or do you just float around with no method?

my strategy is what i use for all Bethesdas open world games....I set a character a list of 'objectives' to accomplish and when i have done all those i delete and start another character.

did this massively for Oblivion and i was never off for the whole 6 years. But thats just me.

Rivet City...need that +1Int Bobblehead...(well...until I got lazy and modded a swap for it and the one on dads desk.)

From 101, head west uphill to the near[ish] barn - a sniper rifle is inside, great to have really early on simply for the scope sight, actually firing it is optional. ;P
Then plunder Springvale and head to Megaton to do the wasteland survival quest early on. If you manage to get the quest "replicated man" started early enough, you can pick up the A23 Plasma rifle reward while you are in Rivet city doing the last parts of the wasteland survival quest~ which sets you up nicely for the rest of your playthrough.

Megaton for me, need to get the wasteland survivial thing out of the way which I think helps for the rest of the game.

It depends on what type of character I am playing. For a good character, I usually head straight to megaton. Neutral goes to the supermarket, and for Evil, I go to Megaton and blow the bomb first.

once i actually managed to get all the bobbleheads right after vault exit (missing just a few), by looting a few specific stealth boys for tricky parts and running like crazy on the wastelend and outrunning the weak low level critters. I can't say it was worth it, the game felt fairly empty thereafter. Nowadays I just go with the flow, try to get to merchant houses and spend caps on cool stuff.

Step inside Megaton, then head outside and get to Rivet City for the bobblehead (avoiding xp wherever i can otw). After that, then do a bunch of mini-quests in Rivet City and unlock everything i can. Usually get the A23 Plasma Rifle while i'm there. Back to Megaton more of the same. After snagging a few levels, i head out to Bailey's Crossroads for the Operation: Anchorage DLC to get the oh-so-necessary for me asap Chinese Stealth Armor. After finishing the DLC, it's wherever the road takes me.

Can you elaborate? Sounds interesting.

I agree. Is it a written list of objectives, or is it just something you keep in your head?

Having a sniper rifle early game is great. I always grab the one from the hollow rock outside the far back wall of Megaton. *For anyone who has never found it, the hollow rock is about 20+ feet from the back wall [on the outside!] near the small dead tree

Oh, and I always do the Megaton quests first to get the house and then I go grab Dogmeat from the wrecking yard.

LOL, guess I ain't got much evil in me, I've never sided with Tenpenny and in NV, I've never sided with the Legion.

Generally I wander into Megaton first. With good characters getting the house early is great so you can drop off excess crap. For evil characters, I go double evil. Blow up Megaton, then side with the ghouls in Tenpenny Tower. The ghoul mask is awesome if you get it early enough.

After I get a house I either do Anchorage or Mothership Zeta, possibly The Pitt. I save Point Lookout for near the end though, since it's the glitchiest for me. (Managed to convince F3 to work on windows 8... for the most part).

If I'm not doing any of that I'm just wandering around randomly looking for things to do. Finding Agatha and getting her violin back for her is a must-do activity as well... the violin music is great when you're tired of listening to Three Dog all the time.

Always forget about that one. XD
The supermutant lurking around an abandoned truck by the river on the way to Big Town is a good place to pick up an early missile launcher with little hassle, if you are into big gunz.

I tend to avoid DC till at least level 10 [half-decent HP / skills / carry by then], other than a river-hugging run to Rivet City via the Citadel for the guide.

P.S - imo, stealth armour / power armour are for wimps: Ranger battle armour is my preferred choice. [Though the Astartes Armour mod is too fun to pass up.] ;P

I tend to loot springvale, get the quest from the women in the house (extra caps for ya'), then kill her and loot the rest of the caps. Clear out the school there, all floors and sell all the loot from there. Armor and weapons.
I'll complete the 1rst 2 quests for the survival guide and disarm the bomb and get a home. From here, I'll do "Those!". Kill the mutated ants. And the letter delivery quest u get from inside the saloon from the blonde toon sitting down. Forgot the name of the quest. Once thats done, I do the three dog quest and recover the satilite and install and activate it just so I can hear the radio better.

Afterwards, it's random quests and uncovering all locations as I go. I don't do the rest of the main quest until aound level 20-ish. Point Lookout and The Pitt will be done.
