FIX - Running Fallout 3 through Mod Organizer with Steam Overlay, FOSE, and MODS!
~~~~ THIS FIX ONLY WORKS WITH MOD ORGANIZER ~~~~
I only recently bought Fallout 3 during the QuakeCon and have already found many flaws with compatibility. Many people have been trying to run the game through Mod Organizer with FOSE but have not been able to get the Steam Overlay working as well.
I have found how to do this, it's very simple in fact.
Step 1.) Go to your Fallout 3 install and make sure that everthing has been renamed back to their original names. (e.g. "Fallout.exe", "FalloutLauncher.exe", "fose_loader.exe").
Step 2.) Rename FalloutLauncher.exe to FalloutLauncher_ORG.exe. (Yes I know I told you to rename it back to it's original, I'm just making it slightly easier.)
Step 3.) Download FalloutLauncher Replacer from: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/21364/?
(You can thank AlexxEG for this amazing fix!!!)
Click files and then download it manually.
Step 4.) Extract the exe to your Fallout 3 install directory. Rename it to FalloutLauncher.exe.
~~EDIT~~
Make sure that Mod Organizer is installed in your FO3 game directory (ie ...\\steamapps\common\fallout 3\Mod Organizer). If you want you can add launch parameters to direct the launcher to a different location. These can be found on the mod page.
Step 5.) Launch the game through Steam, make sure that there are no launch parameters.
Step 6.) A small black CMD window will open, press the number next to Mod Organizer on your keyboard.
Step 7.) Mod Organizer will open. Launch FOSE through Mod Organizer and Fallout 3 will load, with mods, fose, and the glorious STEAM OVERLAY! And yes, everything works, hours played, streaming, everything!
If something isn't working, post a comment and I'll try my best to help!
Could you figure this out for Fallout NV? There doesn't seem to be a Launcher Replacer for NV, so this doesn't work for it unfortunately. :/
I havn't yet tried modding, or even playing New Vegas yet, however I will try over this weekend to get it working. Have you tried just installing NVSE, then running it through MO? Or does the Steam Overlay not work with it?
The command box comes up but when i hit the number next to my mod organizer (3) it says something like "not found hit any key to esc". Can you help?
Actually don't even worry, I figured it out. You have to add FNV 4GB to mod organiser, then under run where it says shortcut click it and press add to desktop. Then the link on the desktop you add that to Steam Library.
When you run it from there it won't actually open Fallout but the mod manager, but that's ok. Because when you run Fallout with FNV 4GB it will notice that it's running and give it Steam overlay.
The thing is it won't record your in game time but that's fine to me, other than that it works.
Hey, just an idea, try using the Fallout Launcher Replacer, rename it to FNVLauncher.exe, and replace it with the original one. In steam right click on New Vegas, add launch parameters and add "--fose nvse_loader.exe". Try launching with that perhaps? :steamhappy:
Are you launching FOSE through MO? Also I forgot to mention that Mod Organizer has to be placed in your fallout 3 install folder (ie ...\\steamapps\common\fallout 3 (goty)\Mod Organizer). I will add that to the guide. Tell me if this works or not and I'll try my best to help :dwayneelf:
Yeah im not sure im doing it right lol, how can i get the mod organizer (Nexus Mod Manager) into my fallout folder and have the launcher recognize it as such? I found a way to do it but not directly i had to mess with the launch options but that brought it straight to the Nexus files I had been using (--mo "C:\Program Files\Nexus Mod Manager\NexusClient.exe") and after that I had to launch fallout, when it did launch it wasnt a FOSE or modified, and when i did get the FOSE version to run it seems that it's running independent of the entire setup because i get a error message and no Steam overlay... also I'm almost sure my mods aren't working properly now :( i have no idea what's goin on- all i want is to be able to play fallout 3 with mods and steam overlay
Sorry to hear your trouble :sadelf:
I see you are using nexus mod manager, that changes things :3
Nexus Mod Manager and Mod Organizer are two seperate programs entirely.
Now that I'm thinking about it I honestly have no idea if this works with Nexus Mod Manager, this was really intended for Mod Organizer however I feel that it should work anyway haha.
What kind of error message was displayed? If it was something like "missing executable" or "invalid arguments" I may be able to help out there, however I myself stopped using NMM a long time ago so it may be hard to remember where everything is.
You could also try a reinstall of FO3 if possible? Make sure to back up your mods etc, although this is a really last resort sort of thing.
Also something to think about, Mod Organizer is a very efficient mod sorting program when compared to NMM as it injects the mods into the game, rather than moving them into the data folder which can sometimes lead to errors etc. Honestly if you can afford changing to MO (ie redownloading everything) it would be well worth it :D
Yeah, honestly i might look into mod organizer, tbh the hours i've played on fo3 via NMM dont count towards steam so theyve never been tracked anyhow, and the save character ive got now- i dont even remember where to pick up from since i havent played in like a year and have just been trying to get steam to read my hours. I'll try to reinstall everything and figure out Mod Organizer for fo3 and fnv... but ill keep NMM since Skyrim works fine anyway :P
Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Please write back if you manage to get everything working with MO, I'll try to help again if anything goes wrong! :happy_creep:
Good luck in advance
So I followed the steps, but when I attempt to open Fallout with Fose in Mod Organizer, the command prompt box reappears. If I hit 3 again, I get an error. If i hit 2, it simply closes and reopens the prompt. If I hit 1, nothing seems to happen? :squirtmeh:
Strange, so when you start the game through steam, the black box appears. You click Mod Organizer. MO opens and you run FOSE. Is the black box reappears again after this?
I followed the steps and i run the game through steam the command prompt box appears , i press 3 to start and i can see for about 2 seconds on the friends tab that steam has detected that i'm running fallout 3 goty but then it disappears. When i start FOSE through MO game runs perfectly but no steam overlay. I haven't set any launch options and MO is installed inside the goty file.Any sort of help would be appreciated! :steamhappy:
Thanks in advance
Sorry for late reply, do you have any mods that work outside of Mod Organizer? Such as FOSE plugins or 3rd party launchers?
If you don't, try checking that the Steam Overlay is enabled for FO3
(Right click on FO3, properties, enable overlay)
Someone who talked to me had this disabled so you might do also :P
Get back to me and I'll see if I can find what's wrong
Veni Vidi Vodka Sep 11, 2015 @ 9:22am
Steam Overlay is enabled and i'm not running any mods outside of MO nor any 3rd party launchers (all of my mods are pretty "basic" they're basically the top 30 mods of the hot files so pretty much everyone uses them). Don't know if i'm helping with this or not :P
One think i did notice is when i try to start fallout.exe through MO instead of fose.lodaer.exe i get a CTD on startup. Could something be wrong with the original .exe thus causing steam to be unable to detect which game i'm playing?
Also on MO on the Modify Executables tab on FOSE i don't have checked Overwrite Steam AppID nor i know what i should fill in the blank space (i have seen some threads about people filling this but i don't know if it's the solution for this problem).
My thanks in advance
