But yeah, play Vanilla, and then play mods. Try an alternate start mod later, as well, for better testing purposes.
Don't worry about mod balance when you do play mods, just try different ones, one at a time.
This game gets a little cranky. :)
But still, the game is a bit old, I'd not recommend texture replacement mods if your computer is not amazing. :)
I don't know that much about texture packs, all I know is they are a bit resource intensive. If I'm wrong about thatl, let me know.
I know they have mods for Morrowind that make it look better than Oblivion. :)
