Fallout 3 - Game of the Year Edition

Fallout 3 - Game of the Year Edition

Player Character Freezes
I'm having a strange issue. The game ran fine until I got through all of the character creation, but now I can't escape the vault. I randomly lose control of my character during combat. My character will either walk into a wall and get murdered by the guards or just stand there and get shot. I've tried all the fixes on the Pinned forum post here and on PCgamingwiki. I'm running a clean install with no mods. Any ideas?

havent really heard of that one before. what controllers are you using, using mouse/keyboard? xbox controller? maybe something there is conflicting.

or on the pc open console and type EnablePlayerControls see if that works

I'm using mouse and keyboard. I'm essentially losing all input to my character. I can't even open the pipboy or the menu.

whats your OS. Is it windows 8? Sometimes losing control like that is a sound problem with windows 8 maybe.

Look over this old thread about something similar, had to do with sound file problems. Maybe try out the options they tried in this thread to see if it works..

1) Download the codex pack
2) Change the fallout ini sound file sizes to 2x (4095/512)
3) change .OGG

maybe something will work...

I plugged in my controller and the issue hasn't occured since. I'm not sure what was going on, but I'm happy to play with the controller.

If you are playing without mods, there is a recurring issue with the game where it will lose full screen or "focus". There is a fake fullscreen mods that fixes this or you can run the game in windowed mode (which is just... terrible). You may also be experiencing quirks with Games for Windows Live... there's a disabler for that too and it won't affect the game in anyway (except for GWFL achievements). Glad you at least found a workaround though.

Before I ran into the issue I tried to install Tale of Two Wastelands, but something was bugging out the installer. I went back and tried again and Tale of Two Wastelands works, which also seems to have fixed the problem. Likely because the New Vegas engine doesn't have the same issues that the Fallout 3 engine does.

It's amazing how different the two games are. I've played NV for over 100 hours with no issues, while I can't make it out of vault 101 in Fallout 3. Thanks for the help gents.
