Fallout 3 Crashing Within First Few Minutes
I have the Windows 10 technical preview installed, and originally I had problems with launching the game in the first place (not GOTY edition) but that was fixed with an update to windows live games. Now my problem is within the first few minutes of getting into the game and setting up my character, the screen goes black and says Fallout 3 has stopped working, and I'm forced to close it. Does anyone know what my problem might be? Here are my PC specs if it helps:
8gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz Desktop Memory
Gigabyte R9 280X GDDR5-3GB Graphics Card
AMD FD8350FRHKBOX FX-8350 FX-Series 8-Core Black Edition
ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
Thanks for your help :)

So I tried doing all the steps in the above thread and it still crashed during character creation. I skipped the last step and just did the multi-threaded AI next time, and it lasted right before leaving the operating room, only to crash again... still at a loss for solutions.

It's your processor. Do Step 4 from BenWah's guide, or just download the Fallout 3 Unofficial Patch (which does it for you).

Make sure you also have both the launcher and game's EXEs set to compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3, that fixed the remaining freezes for me.

Where can I find the Unofficial Patch?

Ok after trying everthing I've found something that worked. I felt it would be unfair not to share. Go to msconfig/boot/advanced and change processors to 2. A bit of a jumpy start but then smooth and fluid gameplay. All the best, Captain Stuggles the 3rd

Yup, this is what the fix USUALLY does for you. It can also be done with Fallout 3's EXE in task manager. You can right-click the game's EXE from Processes (I think it's simply fallout3.exe) and Set Affinity so that only CPU 0 and/or 1 are used.

The game doesn't handle quad-cores well. Two max, or it flips out.
