Why is it called Fallout 3 if it's the first game?

Nah - the last little bit of my post (the line that starts with "Theory") is the only bit that's serious. As others have also said, Fallout 3 changed the whole style, feel, gameplay of the 1st two Fallout games into the current (popular) format, and that's when it became a major hit. The other Fallouts were very different. So many folk do regard Fallout 3 as the first "real" Fallout game.
Other than this, the rest of my post was Hogwash. Yes, that would be the first word I'd choose for it - Hogwash :D

Because the game is 3 times the normal fallout game. So its a sin to name it fallout and not have the 3.

Its becuase you have 2 Fallouts before Fallout 3. But i think you cant count.
And maybe your next question is, Why is fallout 4 called number 4 because Fallout new vegas has no number!!

Theory - It is, the first of the franchise that was released in the first-person, RPG format - many fans regard it as the first Fallout for that reason, as this format has become synonomous with the Fallout franchise now.

But there was Fallout Tactics before Fallout 3, so there were even three games before Fallout 3.

On a side note, I liked the Fallout series when it was still a RPG.
